New signing - Stubbs - Kelly would do for me, Byrne would then be my 4th choice. Baldwin will probably have to be more patient and take his chance when it comes. I still believe we plan on putting Johnson in that 3 but half of me is writing him off already, he'll be nowhere near match fit for a while at least. Good early shout for our annual waste of a signing.
Like I say I'd be happy with another centre half probably on loan, same quality as Oyegoke/Tompkinson and don't see why that won't happen

It’s all well and good focusing on the period since GA took charge, or the fact that the last however many games were unbeaten, but the fact remains the team did not score enough goals and conceded too many over the season. Add in that the midfield didn’t score enough goals and you have the reason they finished where they did.

If promotion is the aim, the team are relying on the defence matching their purple patches from last season and Cook and Young repeating their own hot streaks.

Over a full season it is too much to ask the expect essentially the same players to gain an extra 15-20 points and score 30 more goals whilst conceding ten fewer. Are you expecting Sarcevic and Baldwin to make that much difference? Young ? A hot streak at Swindon apart he’s hardly prolific, Cook’s age will catch up with at some point and so you’re relying on Kav, Smith, Walker, Pattinson and Pointon to get 30-40 between them

 

Playing the right way you should really be expecting Sarcevic, young, wright, Kav, Smith, Walker, Pattinson and Pointon to get 30-40 between them surely? I appreciate it's easier said than done but that's what you'd expect if we weren't absolutely cursed as a club

 

For a midtable side? Yeah, you're right.

Perhaps greedily though, I'd kind of like us to aim a bit higher than that.

That's 55 and I feel some of those numbers are on the conservative end, dependent on injuries etc of course

I meant take your 25-30 from Cook and Young and then you still need 40-50 from the rest of the team. The midfield and strikers other than Cook contributed about 35 between them last season. If you need 80-90 goals for top three and to concede an average of one per game, I’m not sure the current squad has it in them. They didn’t show the quality consistently enough last season, I don’t think it’s realistic to expect essentially the same bunch of players plus Sarcevic to be transformed from inconsistent also rans into top three.

There is too much deadwood in the squad, they need paying off and quality replacements or you wait until their contracts expire and start again.

Really hope I am wrong. Genuinely do.

 

They showed it after Alexander was appointed. Pointon came on the scene late and looked like he could score goals hopefully Pattison will add to the total, Cook has scored goals since he arrived. There is a question mark over Young despite certain posters saying he is worth up to 500k. Kavanagh looked very promising and Walker will chip in as well. With Smith coming off the bench. I think we look strong from midfield forward The question mark remains over the defence and we are going to have to wait and see on that

 

It's not that end of the pitch that I'm worried about.

If GA can't find tactics and a formation to play to get enough goals out of our attacking players then he should retire.

My worry is - will the other teams score less than us? Will our defence be strong enough?

Right now, if Walker gets injured in the first game and is out for 3 months, we're knackered.

You cant have ambition. Its a dirty word. You will get what you are given and make the best of it.

Just be happy you have a club to support.

 

TBF I think we can stand a Walker injury. We have Walker, Pattison, Pointon and Sarcevic fighting for 2 shirts. All 4 are capable of hitting double figures (or near enough) if given enough games.

 

Dragging it out over 2 days as well.

 

I’m not sure what I was expecting it but it was just 5 minutes of absolutely nothing.

Pressure was off too as we chucked it in march and there was little realistic expectation after that. Different question to when we were in the heat of it - and they crumbled. Like a horse miles behind the winner, finishing best of the rest
