Didn't Gillingham do the same last season, the new owners backing the then manager Neil Harris, even poaching Williams when we thought he was signing for us, you'd think signing a better class of player gives you better chance of getting promotion, but apart from the year we spent heavily under Richmond to get us into the Premier League most of our successful teams have been built on team spirit with a mixture of young and old seasoned footballers.

Maybe Baldwin was trying to discuss a new deal but Notts County wernt interested.

And he wasn't on the retained list either. For me, the only positive of Baldwin (at this point) is he shares a birthday with Stuart.

Notts County release retained list with Jim O'Brien departing Meadow Lane after 5 years
Richard Brindley, John Bostock, Aden Baldwin and Tobi Adebayo will also leave upon the expiration of their contracts, while Connell Rawlinson has been made available for transfer

They did, as did Stockport, Wrexham and Mansfield.

Our transfer activity looks underwhelming, our pre season results have been embarrassing and folk are confused as to where the promised investment is.

Give me Port Vales activity over ours 7 days a week, twice on a Sunday.

I do think a good manager can achieve success with average players at this level, as those teams mentioned proved, but if you have the right people spending the money wisely you’d rather invest in top starters than the squad filler we’ve recruited at the back.

midfield and attack don’t concern me too much but CB and LB do.

looking back to Parky’s History makers….look at the leaders in that squad. Darby, McArdle, Davo, Jones…..then a class strike partnership.

this side doesn’t have those characters. Richie isnt. Closest is Stubbs, who isnt certain to start. We need a few of those types then the investment would mean something. At the minute we look like we are just gonna chuck a load of defensive permutations together and try stumble on the least leaky combo!

Im fine with the MF and FW options too. I didnt mind the Wright signing, but I do think we also need to bring in another LWB, a real one. And as for CB, if I am honest I would like another 2 (with departures) but as there is no chance of that happening, then 1 at the bare minimum. We also need suitable back up for Sam Walker because if he gets injured then I dont think Doyle is up to filling in for a long period.

Byrne, Stubbs, Baldwin, Kelly as our only 'recognised' CB's is a worry, with Johnson and Richards in the mix too.

Yes, I'm well aware - I actually referenced it in my posts so unfortunately your time spent educating me was wasted I'm afraid.

I was pointing out there had been discussions about a contract prior to that (or Baldwin was lying, possible I suppose but ultimately unknowable). If he had already turned down their offer then he obviously wouldn't be on the retained list, all we do know for certain is he then joined a team higher in the league straight after

I thought similar last season, this recruitment hasn't massively changed things. Our spine needed strong heads and i suppose you could say Sarcevic is that type, he's been a captain everywhere before and is probably our vice this season I'd guess? But that back line needed a vocal member, someone to sort them out and keep them in check last season, it looks like it still does this time around.

On that 2013 team, the rotation was incredible. I looked at it a few weeks back when someone else mentioned that squad, but i think the most someone started was 38 games? Hanson and Wells only started 27 of 46 games together and if i remember they didn't finish many together either, a handful at best.

The player is a loan signing according to the T&A, and whilst it’s all agreed, his club won’t let him go until they get the replacement player in at their end. We’re in a chain! Hopefully it will all fall into place before Austria but we’ll see….

In a way, that is quite positive. It means the player in question does hold a little value to his parent club.

I think we saw togetherness towards the end of last season, as you say a good manager who can generate that camaradary amongst the squad can make a massive difference.
Can't agree with your last comment we haven't kicked a ball in anger yet.

While a win is a win, I do think the run we had at the end of last season is been overplayed. We wern't playing great, we were only narrowly beating teams and some didn't even have anything to play for.

Isnt it funny when we have a bad season it is 'forget last season, a fresh start'.....but we are constantly reminded about last seasons finish.

Spot on, when betting for instance I was always taught don't bet on the first 6 or last 6 games of the season as they chuck up strange results. TBH I put little sway in them games and wanted serious investment into the first team, I've not seen that in the slightest but we have to hope GA can out perform the budget which as we have seen at this level is possible. But I won't be showing faith because of the end of the season, I remember when Hughes first came in we looked arguably the best we looked under him at the end of the season when he took over from Adams.

I am still of the opinion that we are short of quality in the striker dept. SP.
I simply cannot see where the goals are going to come from to get us promoted - apart from Cook if he can keep it going and stays injury free / drop of form.

Five with another managers team. It was the four matches we lost which was the aboration.
