Again, just to be absolutely clear, I have never mentioned Platt and I'm not sure why you insist on cramming him into the debate.

I do though predict that if Baldwin makes around 30 league starts we won't be anywhere near the promotion picture and I'm even more confident I'll be proven right again about his ability, just like I was with Taylor.

 

I mentioned Platt as it's been said before that Baldwin was rejected by Notts but that Platt rejected us, which I find funny as their circumstances are exactly the same - it's funny how things can be framed to make the same circumstances as a negative against us no matter which way it goes.

You then responded saying Platt had had a decent season but Baldwin hadn't, hence my last response to you

 

I don't think we can be expecting him to be defending crosses and putting in too many goal saving tackles.

We either want a wing back who is fundamentally a defender but can "do a job" going forward - like Halliday - or we want someone who is more attacking and can hopefully help create enough goals that the opposition don't get the chance or want to attack that much. Someone who can do both is probably playing in league one. We have to be realistic about Wright's strengths and how he can contribute to the team and not get too agitated because he isn't strong at defending or if he makes a mistake defensively. He's definitely going to make some. He needs to earn his crust at the other end though.

 

Platt did have a decent season I thought. I'd certainly have liked to keep him.

Baldwin, however, clearly didn't. It's all there in the highlights before we even mention the league high 86 goals conceded.

 

Yeah the debate really doesn't work in Baldwin's favour in terms of who had a better season, we just have to hope it's a stroke of genius and hes the exact type of player we need regardless of form.

 

I really rated Platt, more than most on here before he left. We're perhaps arguing at crossed purposes

 

Lets hope his attacking and causing problems is 80% of his game, I'm not a lover of trying to get League two players to play roles they are not familiar with, time will tell.

Exactly my point with those suggesting that Johnson is our answer to our centre half problems.

Notts County are more famous than us and have a richer history. Historically a bigger club than us.

Last few years mean fook all when weve sat in the toilet of L2. And as for bigger crowds, means naff all too. We get an extra 5,000 or so, means absolutely nothing in how football and the world views us!!!

 

Platt was on our retained list as under offer. Baldwin wasnt on Notts Countys.

 

Sarcevic was a good signing. Good to see Wright sign again, Keeping Pointon, Brad and Walker was obviously good news, but feel a bit underwhelmed with the rest of our business this summer, particularly at the back, after Rupp spoke of upping investment.

The defensive signings look squad players and not comfortable with taking Baldwin from a basket case defence at Notts County until seen him play.

I keep thinking that its the manager that means everything, and non-glamorous squads like Cambridge, Stevenage, Crawley and Morecambe have all gone up with a good manager…… but something is still missing for me.

is this really it for the recruitment? Maybe a late loan or two still to come in?

i guess Young is like a new player now back, and Patto to some extent too…..

 

Baldwin said they'd been in discussions, Notts haven't commented either way. Baldwin might have been lying to save face but on the balance of probabilities it seems unlikely. He signed for us almost immediately after the retained lists are out so more than likely he'd already agreed a deal with us so why would they not just put him on the retained list?

 

Yes I know, I don't happen to put much stock in arguments over who is a bigger team or not as I don't really think it matters all that much in reality. All I said is it could be argued (which it can on all recent history) that Baldwin moved on to a bigger club. It is a little strange people on here seem to think he's taken a step down in his career... where were they in 96???

 

I've checked and it was a month after the retained lst, not almost immediately as I've said here

 

Not over the moon with signings. Injured players are ours anywhere and are good additions. No big signing yet. No statement stuff as yet ….so mehhhhhhhhh from me.

 

From last season ,defenders gone Hendrie, Taylor, Ridehaugh, Odisina, Platt and then two loanees Tomkinson and Oyegoke.
Platt and the lad from Brentford are the only two worth shouting about, the rest never hit the heights in any way and Oyegoke only at the end of his loan.
I can not recall Byrne or Baldwin, so will wait to actually see them play.
We do need to bring in another centre half, Kelly is improving , Stubbs has the quality, but lacks pace, Richards i just dont see playing that position, Johnson is a full back and he isnt going to get in ahead of Halliday on last season's form.

 

Port Vale are trying for Malik Wilks. What a cracking signing for L2 if they manage to pull that one off. Thats ambition.
