Foden is number 47 for Man City, what position is that ? It's been years since numbers on shirts reflected positional placings on a pitch, it ended with squad numbers. I suspect 6 is Smallwood's lucky number, which is why he wears it, his actual position on a pitch would be described as a "4".

Number 6 as a "position" is, was, and will always be a left sided centre half in the same way a number "3" will always be left sided fullback or left sided wingback.

You are both actually correct, it did used to be that number 6 was a defender but not anymore. The pundits last night referred to Rodri as a number 6 who plays in a defensive midfield position. I've heard pundits in the modern game refer to a number 6 as a midfielder plenty of times in modern times.

 

Go back and show me more who, pre-squad numbers, has ever played number six as a defensive midfield player and also, tell me using your logic what number position the left sided centre half was pre-squad numbers. By your logic LCH is a 4, which is historically a defensive midfield player.

Agreed. In a sense both sides are correct. Number 6 was traditionally viewed more as a central defender, but in modern times it is often referred to as the role deployed to the sitting midfielder that operates just in front of the defense.

 

In my mind the positions are:

1 - Goalkeeper
2 - Right Back
3 - Left Back
4 - Centre Mid (defensive)
5 - Centre Back
6 - Centre Back
7 - Right Wing
8 - Centre Mid (attacking)
9 - Striker
10 - Forward
11 - Left Wing

That’s of course when everyone played 4-4-2, but with “squad numbers” and 4-4-2 seemingly being a thing of the past it’s all very different these days.
