Well he will not start ahead of Cook and Young, but is another option of the bench and can not be any worse than Oliver and grandad Derbyshire. Can not believed we signed him, or that he is still here.

No, that’s my point. Smith has only been able to score regularly against the u21 sides (in the FL trophy). Couldn’t do it for Swindon, Hull or Oxford and I believe struggled for us in L2.

Kavanagh is no different as he’s also only been able to score consistently against u21 sides, but not when loaned to L2 sides

Which would be fine if it was a loan. But we’ve signed this “gamble” on a 2.5yr deal….!

“And I believe he will get the chance here”.

Doesn’t sound like the person that picks the team??

He is 20 with a bit of experience already got a decent report from the Newport Journo. And has had a little bit of championship experience time will tell but this is the sort of player we should be scouting

After Young’s transformation the moral of the story RE any new player should be to give him the benefit of the doubt

Wright is a good example, signed on loan, started to show some good signs and we lost him to a league 1 team, who took a punt and now he is back.with us looking to find that sparkle again

I hope we don' pay him a car allowance, might as well buy by him a Monthly bus ticket around Middlesboro'

Was he scouted though? Or did the Gent/Boro link seem sufficient scouting?

Hmmm, some of us saw the potential in Young though and couldn’t understand why Hughes froze him out for the likes of Harratt

Harratt also had potential, but was also pretty much frozen out, even before his non-football scandals

You use Wright as a good example, but how many others haven’t worked. Imagine if Tulloch or Afoka had been bought on 2.5yr deals

He was getting more chances than Young but didn’t deliver as much (for us) than Young??

I mean, you've kind of proven my point because Tyreik has now come back to League two which suggests he wasn't ready for a higher level!

For what it's worth I think they were both under-utilised / misused. Harratt was on the bench a lot but seldom used. Neither player suited the way Hughes wanted to play which made it more confusing why they were even signed in the first place (by Hughes)

Let’s hope he’s better than the last young Irish player we had. What’s Costelloe doing these days?

I think he would have used Harratt a lot more if he hadn't got himself sent off at the end of his 1st appearance. Then the hare coursing / dog controversy occurred and off he went back to Town.
