They could have released him but the club would have had to pay him off and rightly so too, your correct his time at Barrow wasn't great and maybe if the club had made the call at the start of this season few would have complained.
In fact looking back after the Hughes situation it made sense to pay him off rather than another season long loan because as long as Hughes was at the club there was no way he would bring him in from the wilderness.

He was dropped for being anonymous and failing to put any effort in to tracking back in games that actually matter, then was (allegedly) a dick about it. Now he is (seemingly) slow burning his return from injury in the hope of a better offer. Hope he does stay, pulls his finger out and score lots of goals for us but if he wants a new contract he needs to do anything at all for us to earn it.

Would any player capable of possibly turning this ship around really want to join a club in such a mess? Fans openly in revolt, a manager who doesn't know his best 11, a mentally weak team, a squad lacking pace, a team with no win in 8, an aging squad, a team that gives up, a squad of over 30 players, a tactic of missing out midfield by hoofing. Quite a list of positives for any potential agent wanting to sell our club to their player.

 

I wouldn’t let him bring anyone in ,I’d do what Geoffrey Richmond used to do when the season was over and save any money for a summer rebuild. He’s got Young now for the season and despite Alexander’s ridiculous comment that he’s now got the squad reduced he actually hasn’t, our squad is still to big , we aren’t going down ,the chances of playoffs are for people who believe in fantasy football so I’d tell him to make do with what he’s got. I certainly wouldn’t allow another journeyman like Hunter to come in and increase our over bloated squad.

 

How could any player not want to join us and realise a lifetime ambition, can't wait to pull on the shirt,be honoured to represent the club,say this club is too good for this league, etc etc

The fact is that players should want to be here. We should be there or thereabouts in the league. We should have good training facilities and backroom staff. We should have VP as a fortress. We should have high expectations. We should have players that leave everything on the pitch on match days. We should....

 

I would’ve looking at every aspect of our club including the coaches which to my knowledge have been there forever.

It's the point I was making before about how hard it is to exit players, especially when we have been giving out longer contracts. It's not easy to shift them and especially when we're playing so poorly. Who wants a player who's having limited impact in a poor team?

 

We need a quality CM and a quality CB. the ones we have in our squad are dogshit. The team has no spine. No wonder we can never control games

It's interesting there's been no transfer gossip posts since lunchtime yesterday. Just goes to show that as a fanbase we've come to the realisation that bigger things than the playing squad need to change. I can't remember a transfer window being this poor. Was it Gent that managed to shift Guthrie? If not, it just highlights another position at the club that's filled with inexperience. For crying out loud, he can't even send back a loanee in Tulloch who hasn't played since I don't know when. GA must be livid at having being lied to. He was probably told we'd have to lose some to bring some in, but Gent has failed miserably. Sparks will spin it as keeping his powder dry until the summer, when in reality, those asked to leave this window will have told him to do one. It's evident that the form has fallen off a cliff since boxing day.

The last 10 months have been one of the biggest *@?$ ups I can remember. I think we all now realise that Hughes, Gent and Sparks completely blew the transfer budget last season. This was probably the reason why Macdonald didn't join in January and why Derbyshire was brought back from his busmans holiday in India. With the likely drop off in revenue we'll be fishing in the shit pool for a good while yet.
