Aaron Mclean scored goals in the seasons before he joined us. Age does eventually catch up with certain players

Isn’t the age regarding “qualified” players, 23, not 21? And if that is right, neither Young or Wright would be included in the 23yrs+ “roster”

    Think it's 21.

But I dunno, the rules seem to change every year.

You need to remember that a lot of us on here are very good judges of a footballer's ability and potential.

Canavan was limited, but you can accommodate limited players by playing to their strengths.

We're nowhere near consistent enough for any of that noise, though.

We're already on our fourth manager since Canavan left us 2 years ago, and none of those managers were even remotely similar to one another.

It's just a matter of time with us until players get moved on.

Nope, it's Under 21. Rules and registrations are available to the public once they are all submitted after the summer transfer window. -> EFL Squad List: Season 2023/24 - The English Football League

We had 21 registered of our 22 available slots (keepers are exempt). So if Wright and Young have come in, without any over 21 outfielders leaving, we will have to de-reg one player or sell one. My guess is that Oliver has actually gone and it's just awaiting to be announced, so we are at capacity for over 21 players.

Honest question: the 22 registered players are not static, they can be registered or deregistered outside the windows? Thinking about long term injury and bringing in out of contract player for eg

No. The registered squad lists can only be changed during and at the end of each transfer window.

And some of our favourite ever players would probably fall into the pants/ meh category that modern day armchair pundits have invented. For instance John Middleton, Dave Fretwell, Rod Johnson, Peter Staniforth, all players from my youth that I idolised and in todays game would be classed as an Ash Taylor/ Liam Ridehalgh type.

A sad indictment of the instant gratification modern day living has created that back in the 70's we didn't demand higher league football and throw the teddies out in the direction of the owner/ CEO because we finished 10th, we just got on with it.

Two season in the PL and "we" think we have a right to higher league football. Bobby Kennedy wouldn't have lasted six months as manager in the modern climate and George Mulhall would have been written off before we appointed him, and definitely sacked at the end of the 1980 season.

I blame Thatcher for most of it.

As @Dennis@Dennis said, the squad lists are submitted the day after the window. Some teams usually leave 1 or 2 spare for a free agent if needed after the summer window, but after Jan everyone tends to be at 22.

If you don't register an O21 player, you can't use them for the rest of the season. But obviously you'll still have to pay them. Think it was Port Vale a season or two ago they had 3 or 4 players on the books after Jan who couldn't be used after spending to survive L1. Literally paid thousands a week in L1 to just go to training. But the plan was to bin off some squad depth this window so we should be fine..... although all the depth is still here currently.

Or maybe a fair few of started going through the golden period ..........how many of our fanbase now can actually recall the years pre 1980s ?????
In the years from 1981 we have probably had 20 decentish years out of 43 something i doubt really happened the 40 odd years before 1981
Maybe we do demand more but i cannot just be happy bumming around at this level because it was the norm 45 years ago this simply aint the same club our away followings on some occasions would probably dwarf our home attendances back then.

Still i suppose in the 70s it was easier to get on with it because you simply didnt have the decent years we have had in the last forty years........... had none of us seen them we maybe in that mindset but we have and is it so bad to want a bit more ?????

I wonder if there’s a penalty clause for cancelling the loan deal and we don’t want to spend the money. There’s quite a list of unused players still sat around and we’re over half way through the window. We royally fu@#£d up in summer…

Very true could you imagine Bryan Edwards lasting from 1971 to 1974 these days with his record being relegation to division 4 in his first season then two mid table finishes in division 4. Don’t remember anyone calling for his head or threatening to wang tennis balls on the pitch in those days.
