It will certainly be interesting does Hughes continue with McDonald to gain game time fitness or does Hughes rest him after virtually a full game against Newport and bring Smallwood back.

I don't know if he's been mentioned on here yet.

    But here's my offering:

    Leam Richardson.

Plays 4-2-3-1, has also been known to employ 3 at the back in a 3-4-2-1.

Guided Wigan through administration and away from relegation to League Two, then got Wigan promoted to the Championship. Known for more direct play than Hughes and for more direct balls into the box, that could easily suit Cook more. Not totally one-dimensional, and not a dinosaur.

Loved by Wigan fans, was sacked when Wigan reached Championship level "with a squad designed to get promoted from League One rather than compete in the Championship".

Genial personality, with experience in the lower leagues.

    Young-ish manager still at 43.

Three failed managerial appointments, one failed managerial extension and three failed recruitment setups.

When is Ryan Sparks going to take some accountability for his continued incompetence at running the football side of this business?

The problem with Sparks is because Rupp is absent he acts and believes he actually owns the club and his word is gospel. He needs someone to hold him to account, or we need someone who can actually run a football club effectively.

If Rupp lived locally and didn't invest his own money we wouldn't have this problem. The club doesn't need an owner pouring his own money in, we have enough of that to get out of L2 easily. We need a CEO who is accountable and can make effective football decisions rather than just looking at how much money he can make on idiotic initiatives like membership schemes and trips abroad.

Rupp and his money aren't the issue. Rupp and his inactivity on running the club are. Once Lawn invested he didn't pour money in and we had reasonable success. If Rupp is going to stay in Germany, he needs to get rid of our pretend CEO and bring in a real hands on football man who knows how to run a football club rather than one whose forte is managing a social media account.

He needs a CEO who can actually appoint a manager, and more importantly one who will do full due diligence on any potential manager before appointing him.

Don't think there will be many better posts than this today
It's all well and good selling advertising on a unique product
It's what happens on the pitch that determines the future of the club
We need football men at the top otherwise the much maligned managerial merry go round will proceed at full speed

    Agreed, well said General.

it frustrates me to think we could have been lining up Wellens and Jewell before Weren’t they spotted in the stands?

don’t get me wrong, we were in disbelief when Hughes was interested and I’d have prob made the same call. But if we’d followed the right process things could have been very different.

    An interesting and good shout.

I would never have even thought about him. Checking his managerial career, he seems to have done well initially as Paul Cook's assistant and then in his own right.

Did a very good job at Wigan by the look of it.

Would definitely be interested in him.

That all said, I don't think Rupp and Sparks have the appetite for sacking Hughes.

Agree with that. In Sparks’s defence, I don’t think he (nor us) could have imagined that MH will be serving up a bore fest of round pegs in square holes football. When he pulled that email out of his spam box, he thought he’s hit the jackpot.

Was discussing this last night. I'm not sure about Jewell, but by all accounts Wellens was about to sign until Hughes showed interest, and they went with the big name rather than the logical choice

Problem is that there are many clubs who have a genuine director of football but as over 40 will sack their manager this season it seems likely that they get it wrong as well. I keep saying appointing a manager is not an exact science. Richmond dropped lucky with Kamara and Jewell, not so much with Hutchings and Jeffries. Lawn and Rhodes went through McCall, Taylor, Jacko before getting it right with Parkinson.

Dont know much about him but maybe it’s time we selected a manager who doesn’t come with an ego bigger than the club. A clear-out of those in the dugout too. I’d want him to bring in his own assistant.

Not quite logical at the time Steve, Wellens had just been sacked after a dreadful spell at Doncaster and most would have gone for someone like Hughes at that time. If Sparks had announced in Feb 22 that he’d turned down Mark Hughes in favour of a man just sacked at Donny I think there would have been another message board meltdown.

Orient, Wimbledon, Salford, Barrow, Notts County, Newport, Crewe, Crawley, Colchester, Port Vale, Swindon, Doncaster, Walsall, MK Dons, Forrest Green, and Tranmere have all got managers who have been in post for a shorter period than Hughes at City.
Sacking the manager is not necessarily going to prevent failure or guarantee success.
I think getting rid of players could do more good than sacking the manager sometimes.

To an extent, I feel for Sparks. He isn't entirely to blame for this. The majority of fans wanted us to hire Hughes, Adams, Bowyer. Some even wanted Mccall back for a 3rd go. On top of that, Hughes was given plenty of money to work with, he's got one of the biggest squads in the league.

The issue is everybody looks at a big name manager an their reputation, they dont look at their playstyle. We need an attacking manager. You cant have a 'park-the-bus' setup at home, in front of 17 thousand fans. its a recipe for disaster

Parker seems to be tweeting about Hughes being on the brink and asking if he should go. Not the usual party line from him, so I wonder if he’s being brave because he knows something?
