Absolutely right. The philosophy in itself is a good one and has paid off in the past however it demands a constant “ churn” of young players to earn higher values to be sold on. If that stagnates, they are in trouble…hence higher fan costs in terms of ticket prices and financial stress. That’s where they are.

Exactly what I was thinking. Still only 33.

 

Would be a good signing at this level I think but I'm not sure he'd want to drop to league two or that he'd for within the budget we've got.

Madine is out for the whole of 2023, looks like, and probably would need time to get up to speed...

Some big names there, no doubt wanting big wages. Jones and Drinkwater need to drop their demands if they want to continue their careers.

Madine sounds like a bit of a wrong un to me.

 

I find it bizarre - both still think they can command £50-100k a week wages. Its not like either will be short of a few bob. Play for £10k a week while they still can as they dont have many years left.

 

Andy Carroll did similar at Reading i think. He accepted a deal on £1K a week in the championship to try and get back playing again as he hadn't been a first team striker in years and if he still had it, he can ask for going rate when he negotiates or if he cant hack it anymore he made enough money and can walk away. Cant imagine he took a similar salary to his new French club, so must have done something right.

 

He has a bit of history for sure.

 

So did plenty of City players you'd now call "legends", that's not a reason alone not to sign them. I suppose, it's something you'd need to weigh against what that particular player brings to the squad.

 

Whatever, but I'd rather take a short term punt on one of these guys rather than a gamble on the likes of Costelloe, Nevers, Bola etc.
They're out of contract and any income is better than none!

 

Why is Gary Madine making the list of available when he must be still injured?

 

He's out of contact so in essence he's available, even if he's not yet fit to play.

Agreed. I wrote a list of players (from when I’ve been supporting City since 1987) who’ve had a spot of bother with the law, and it’s quite long. I suppose many clubs have similar stories.
