There’s usually a strong correlation between reputation and ability.

I've not seen anybody slagging our new signings, and I'm pretty confident that everybody and their dog wants all new signings to do well for the club.
The cynicism arises when when clubs recent records of signings have generally been lacking, add to that young players pushed out of the club to immediately go find their shooting boots elsewhere ( more recently Young and Ebo), people can bleat about bad attitude all they want, haven't seen Flynn having problems at Swindon with his new addition.....
Seems young lads on loan get a lot of starts, young lads under contract get to sit and watch.
I do wonder sometimes why we're so eager to develop other clubs youngsters when we've lads of our own chomping at the bit.

Football, even in the lower and non leagues, is far more analytical and data driven than it used to be. Every player is assessed and analysed, there's video and stats for every player in every game. It's also far more prosperous than in the past, so there's far more people employed to hunt down overlooked talent in the hope that they can generate some big money for their club. Unfortunately, it's far more difficult these days to unearth a hidden gem of the quality of, say, John Hendrie. I hope he proves me wrong, but when he's already 23 and hasn't already attracted the attention of other football league clubs. Then you have to suspect that there's a reason for that, because it's unlikely that he's completely flown under the radar until now.

    Hadn't realised that.
That's fantastic for such a relatively small place.

If I'm answering your specific question on Peterborough, I'd be of the view that their fans know the approach by now and are more comfortable with slight unknown quantities coming in with the expectation that some will hit and some miss but those signings don't necessarily impact their first team.

City tried a similar 'low budget' approach of that a few years ago when Rahic bought a load of players that weren't up to much, inflated the squad and then we moved them on.

I don't think a specific comparison of us to Peterborough on this topic is a fair or appropriate one really - they're literally light years ahead of us. In, say the last five years, I can't think of anyone that we've speculated on and they been sold for a much higher fee. Peterborough have a history of it and their fans are probably much more relaxed about it.

Yes, the Charlton brothers were cousins to Jackie Milburn.

100% agree they are light years ahead, they were 20 years ago! They have the “field” to play with probably in the East of England , Herts and Essex. I get the feeling Colchester are also slowly getting there from my observations.? In comparison to Boro we are rank amateur I agree.

In the same way that you can sometimes be overwhelmed by mediocre signings? Not a dig - of course someone can be underwhelmed by something. City sign injury prone striker from welsh league that nobody else would seemingly touch.

I am underwhelmed and hoping to have egg on my face of course.

Our young lads aren’t good enough is probably the answer. Pointon may be the first to emerge for a long time? Who was the last?

Some very good points there Botts
Peterborough have a team of "football men" running through the spine of their club who don't change their style of play then scratch round the lower leagues for players who may or may not fit, after being nurtured into the Peterborough way of doing things they bring them into a settled squad, expecting one to walk straight into the first team is a bit on the optimistic side to say the least
I also think that for every 10 they sign only 1 plays for the first team and is sold for decent money you don't hear of the failures
For what it's worth am fed up of us signing journey men who are only here for the last pay packets I do think scouring the well scoured lower leagues for talent is a way forward but I could be wrong signing a 23 year old on a 3 year contract after the season has started doesn't fill me with confidence why wasn't he snapped up during close season or as an up and coming 17/18 year old think I read somewhere Blyth Spartans gave him a swerve
Hope am wrong and good luck to the lad fingers crossed he's a success but it's a big doubt for me

What have the TNS fans said? I find that more interesting to read when players leave. Can sheep post on socials?

Was having a convo today with a mate who’s a Villa fan. Talking about Greenwood, and I laughed saying we should have him back cos we’ve had some wrong uns over the years. Can think of:
    Lawrence
    Collymore
    Liburd
    Emmanuel
    Speight
    Robinson
    Neilson (learnt that today)

I’m sure there’s more I’ve forgotten or don’t know about.

The winger that Peter Taylor signed and went on trial (and was convicted) of murder as soon as the season finished. Can't recall his name.
