Fair point, but if we are going with 2 up top as it looks, it might help tempt any potential targets.

I'd like to see a Parky type squad where the first 11 more or less picked itself and then 6 or 7 capable replacements in the squad. At the moment (with the exception of 3 or 4 players), we're still undecided who will make up the remainder of the match day starters. I fear that could be our undoing. Get a strong 11 and supplement, don't get average across the board or that's exactly what we'll see and where we'll finish.

If we are indeed going 2 up top, and with Oliver being out for a while, I would say bringing in another striker has to be a priority in the coming weeks.

I'd say that even if Oliver was fit to be honest.

Kelly and Odusina MUST stay, who else covers for injuries and the suspension of Stubbs, Taylor and Platt. We have seen Oggy can play right side of the back three at a pinch? No one else I’m missing?

Deliberately not discussed. “We have had talks with a number of players, nothing concrete yet.”

That doesn’t sound like we have closed the door to me BB?

    Fair point.

The numbers in the squad remain quite high. Take the three keepers out of the equation and it still leaves 24 outfield players.

    The EFL rules suggest.

    44.9 Squad Lists

44.9.1 Clubs shall be permitted to name up to a maximum number of Players in their Squad List based on the following provisions:

    (b) in respect of League One and Two Clubs 22 Players of which a minimum of 8 must be a Home Grown Player.

44.9.2 The following Players do not need to be included in the Squad List to be eligible to play in League Matches:

    (b) in respect of League One Clubs and League Two Clubs:

    (i) any Under 21 Players; and

    (ii) goalkeepers.

    https://www.efl.com/-more/governance/efl-rules--regulations/efl-regulations/section-6---players/

In the current squad, Finn Cousin-Dawson (4/7/2002), Daniel Oyegoke (03/01/2003), & Jake Young (22/07/2001) apparently are under 21, although whether Young will still fit that criteria at the beginning of the season is questionable.

So unless some leave we seem to virtually have a full quota of Senior players.

They judge the age of a player for the season ahead by their age on Jan 1st in the coming season. I tried copying the list rules from the EFL site, but they are still listing as the 22/23 season. So just add a year onto the below. This seasons U21s will still have to be 21 before Jan 1st. Had a look through some previous seasons lists, it's always Jan 1st. I suppose it's a fixed date, but it does kind of stump you for a good few months if you have some young lads about to turn 22 who you aren't sure of.

    Rules on U21 Players

    Championship

Under-21 players (other than those who are on loan at the Club) do not need to be named on the Squad
List to be eligible to participate in a League Match. For Season 2022/23 Under-21 players will have
been born on or after 1 January 2001.

    League One and League Two
Under-21 Players and Goalkeepers do not need to be named on the Squad List in order to be eligible
to participate in a League Match.

For Season 2022/23 Under-21 players will have been born on or after 1 January 2001.

But yes, we do probably have too many senior players. Guessing one more forward, probably a 19/20 year old on loan and we are done unless there are outgoings.

2 players I'd heard we were looking at at the start of pre season will probably be playing against us tomorrow Coulson and Colburn. Carrick is still deciding what he wants to do with them both although with the signing of Oduor It looks like we may have moved on from Coulson.

Thanks for the reference in respect of January 1st! That clarifies the situation. So Young would still count as an under 21 player in respect of the EFL rules?

I cannot see the EFL changing the formula at this stage, so it would after 1st January 2002, for the 2023/24 season.

By my reckoning, unless someone leaves, we have one slot for a ‘Senior’ player.

Yes, this seasons cut off for a 21 year old to not need registering, they would need to turn 22 on or after Jan 1st 2002. As Young turned 22 at the weekend, he would need to be registered for this coming season.

Squad below who would need registering, currently sits at 22:
Halliday, Ridehalgh, Taylor, Platt, Smallwood, Walker, Osadebe, Cook, Pattison, Gilliead, Odour, Smith, Stubbs, East, Hendrie, Kelly, Oliver, Chapman, Odusina, McDonald, Derbyshire & Young.

They are actively trying to push Young out the door, could we see Hendrie go looking at the lists and I reckon that's about it. All the rest look like they will feature or be used to cover injury/suspension.

These two would be absolute upgrades to what we have currently and would be very impressed. One had a great recent record in league 1 and is a unit by all accounts and the other had some good loans at big clubs in area of the pitch which is the weakest left hand side . These are the type of players I expected this season - quality but with good experience that’s recent and relatively successful.

TBF wasnt that a bug bear of fans last season that the starting 11 pretty much picked itself? Same formation, same tactics, same players with little option to change things if and when needed?

I like that the starting 11 has lots of options and we do not know our best 11. The only guaranteed starts are Lewis, Smallwood and Cook.

I dont disagree that we should be using our budget on a core group of 17 or 18 though - rather than the 20-24 we have seen previous years. Less is more for me - if you are going to offer pro deals to Rowe, Jeffreys, Pointon and Youmbi then utilise them and bin off the 'earners' like Hendrie, East and Young who will be nowhere near the starting 11 when the squad is fully fit.

Given his recent performances, then I get the impression that City may well register Bobby Pointon in the First Team squad. He won’t count towards the Senior Players, but it would increase the number of outfield players to 25.

Absolutely Rod, he’s been a breath of fresh air in his cameo roles. I can see him on the bench sooner than we think? ( Impact player in the last 20 mins?)

    GK - Lewis, Doyle
DF - Halliday, Ridehalgh, Taylor, Stubbs, Platt, Odusina, Kelly (7)
MF - Smallwood, McDonald, Gilliead, Pattison, Walker, Chapman, Osadebe, Oduor, East (9)
AT - Cook, Smith, Derbyshire, Oliver (4)

U21s - Richardson, Oyegoke, Rowe, Pointon, Youmbi (5)

Thats 20 outfield that require registration. I haven't included Hendrie and Young because I think both go.

My only concern is maintaining a high level of performance with a rotating starting 11. Let’s hope those coming in are able to get up to speed straight away. If I recall we started off with good options from the bench last season, but very quickly realised we were weren’t as strong as we thought, hence the first 11 more or less picking itself.

Sounds like Gillingham are about to miss out on a striker for the 3rd time this window. After Alfie May and Joe Piggott turned them down for L1 moves, it looks like their attempts to sign Tyreece Simpson on loan from Huddersfield will be for nothing, as the striker is now expected to join Northampton Town. They've confirmed the signing of Scott Malone in defence yesterday as noted by others, and the midfield on paper looks very good but they do lack that firepower outside of Tom Nichols who has struggled for fitness and form throughout his career.

On other striker news, looks like the Crawley exodus will continue with Ashley Nadesan rumoured to be close to joining Sutton. Wonder if Gillingham might take a look at Dom Telford next? Telford is rumoured to be on big money at Crawley, just from looking at how wagmi are running this window, I'd guess they'd happily left Telford go.

Forwards that are still available....Lyle Taylor, Connor Wickham, Martyn Waghorn, Chris Martin.
Thats true - Losing Walker and Osadebe to bad injuries didn't help though. Then Harratt got the 3 match ban too. That said - Banks, Wright and Dion came in a few days later.
