It's early days so hopefully it's just that he's still settling in but I have to say on that performance, I'm struggling to see what Hughes/Gent have seen in him that makes them think he's worth a 3 year contract.

 

The burning questions for me are: did everyone behave and did any of our lot stay behind to help clean up?

I know, it sounds silly but I’d like to think the answer was yes to both.

As for the game, we’ll I really liked the look of Pattison and Walker. I also thought Hendrie did ok and Cook’s goal was a cracker.

 

It's the first match after one week of training. They need more time to settle and get used to being back playing never mind trying to work well together. Some people are more naturally ready than others. Let's see how things are after another couple of games.

From what I saw and heard not a bit of trouble didn't see any pyrotechnic the guys at the back to the left gave the team great local support, a good day out but lets not get carried away with the standard of opposition, to say apart from the police presence that IMO was OTT the rest of the Bury support team were all volunteers, well done and all the best for the coming season, a proper football club.

 

I agree, that's why I said it's still early days. However, I would have at least expected to see glimpses of why he's been given such a long contract.

 

First game back after only a week’s preseason training and the same old story of people being ultra critical…..

 

Did Tyler Smith go off with an injury at all? Pretty sure I've just seen him coming out of A&E in Bradford limping slightly. Definitely looked like him and he had a Bradford city tracksuit on.

 

I saw some flashes of pace and one lovely cross that should have lead to a goal. But on the defensive side instead of taking people on he continually played it backwards. He obviously is going to be a lot stronger going forward

Likewise Critchlow could struggle in the air. Let’s see after a full season.

 

Flashes of pace do not a footballer make. DMH had pace, but he also struggled to control a football and used to knock it out of play with his own feet - something I saw Oduor do twice this afternoon. Like you say, on the times when he successfully received the ball and could have driven it forward, he chose instead to turn and play it back. That confused me because by the lad's own admission, he sees himself as more of an attacking player than a defensive one. I hope it was just first game nerves but it didn't fill me with confidence and honestly, I was far more impressed with what I saw from both Youmbi and Pointon during their 20 odd minute spells.

 

I honestly don't know. I suspect McDonald is unlikely to play every game. East could be a suitable deputy. Smallwood is likely to partner McDonald, but we all know Gilly was favoured last season.

 

Just on todays showing Taylor looked much better than Stubbs

Don’t get me wrong Gilly does the hard yards but he won’t get into that potential midfield.
