With the odd exception, coaches tend to cut their teeth through coaching the youth sides, academy sides, development sides, reserve sides, assistant coach / manager and then first team coach / manager...it takes a few years I would suggest....it's not rocket science....or have had an illustrious career where they have played and observed some of the best and successful managers in the world....not plucked from an under achieving 18s team at the last minute to be thrust forward as 1st team head coach....

I hope you aren't suggesting Edin's pulled a fast one and hoped no one noticed :(.

Of course not Bronco...I'm sure it's all part of the 3 (5/6?) year master plan that he has...he knows football after all...;)

I'm just saying for Keefly's benefit that coaches become experienced by coaching for many years at different levels and across different age groups...

Liken it to business....very rarely do you get a 32 year old in charge of the public face of a multi million pound business after being in the post room for 18 months....

I like your answer. Very loaded to show how MC is not suitable for the role. You carefully forget to mention coaching badges and football knowledge per se.
I guess you are referring to the likes of Roy McFarland, Trevor Cherry, Paul Jewell, Chris Kamara, Phil Parkinson in your response for players who had an illustrious career but were unproven as managers/coaches??

What do you say about Eddie Howe? Took over Bournemouth at 31 and the rest is history as they say. Took over with no real experience and saved Bournemouth and then went on great ribs taking them to the premier league with a gap in between. Now a sought after top flight manager.

Or another one lee Johnson who took over Oldham and kept them up with relatively no experience and is now enjoying success with a big club in Bristol. Plays attractive football and has gone from strength to strength as a manager. Hardly an illustrious playing career either.

And then you’ve got Neil Harris at Millwall. Promotion and a very good first season in the championship.

Then you’ve got Kevin Nolan at Notts county who very nearly got Notts County promoted last season.

I like your answer as well.

I don't think my answer is loaded to say MC is not suitable for the job...what I am trying to say is that he doesn't have the 'experience' I would expect/want from a 'head coach' at Bradford City...I will fully support him and the team at the start of the season...I have FA Coaching Badges (1 more and I can coach the Academy, 2 more and I could coach at League 1 level as well!!) and football knowledge of over 45 years but I wouldn't expect to go from coaching kids (which I have done week in week out for over 15 years) to become 'Head Coach' of Bradford City. Having been on FA Coaching Courses where you discuss theory and tactics and development etc. it is a world away from the 'real life' of putting tactics into place, reacting to situations and dealing with professional egos etc...'that is where the managerial experience' comes in that I'm referring to....over the years there have been very good coaches that can coach fabulously on the training pitch but can't get the best out of the team and wins on the pitch....

My point about 'illustrious' managers was more about the likes of Giggs / Nevilles / Gerrard / Lampard etc who get good managers jobs without the years of 'experience' working their way up....

I agree that some managers/coaches 'strike lucky' almost in their initial roles but I think they are few and far between. Apart from PP you have highlighted them above!!

Working his way up the ladder? If I went to Uni to study Psychology, I wouldn’t expect my first job to be the head of a department of social workers.

Do you know of any job where you get a qualification, get a certificate and then find yourself in the very top job?

Did you read the first line of my post?

With the odd exception....Eddie Howe has to be the big exception obviously as he was so young when he took over.

Lee Johnson, great manager as a father though....

Neil Harris, Millwall Legend....oh and they backed him....

Kevin Nolan, I would say he had quite a good career playing at Prem level for most of his career...

I'm not saying MC won't cut it but I think the appointment smacked of 'desperation' because nobody else wanted it....read the reports...it clearly says that he hadn't applied and that Edin suddenly thought on the Sunday that he was the best man for the job.....
