Smith is far closer in age to Andy Cook who is 16 months younger than Smith. Derbyshire will be 37 in April, and nearly three years older than Smith. You may disagree, but in my view comparing Smith to Derbyshire, based on age, is disingenuous.
Look l hope he scores a shed full, but l am sceptical, which l think is reasonable, based on the totality of the facts.

Harratt gone, Angol injured, Young out of favour - we needed a striker so its a body at least.

Seen a few comparing this to Folan, Robinson, Donaldson etc. None had Detbyshires pedigree tbh. Nowhere near.

18 month deal seems a tad long but was probably the deal breaker. Cant imagine he will be a high earner. Hopefully its performance related.

Nobody knows how this will turn out much is being made of his years but we have plenty of young legs in the team a bit of nous might be good.

I know we tried to sign him in the summer, so MH must have been desperate to sign him to continue his pursuit of him.

Certainly got the pedigree, but like others I'm worried he is now too long in the tooth to make much of an impact for us. 6 month contract offer would have seemed more sensible to see whether still fit enough to do a job.

I wonder when was the last time MH saw him play live?

Anyhow, good luck to him, hope he does a 'Peter Thorne' for us.

Don’t forget JB, hasnt Cookie got about 5 months left of a deal?

Two choices would see him stay on for the remainder and float off on a free

    OR

Get some money for him now

I’m not advocating either way but it’s a thought nevertheless ?
The latter wouldn’t surprise me tbh?

Lots of 18 month deals are far cheaper than 12 month variants. Sounds more expensive but not necessarily so. It looks like he wants to end his playing days in the UK so 18 months at a lower rate would be attractive to him.

It could be worse. The Saudi team Al Nassr has just recruited a 37 year old on a 2.5 year contract and paying him a King's ransom for his services. ;)

I would have thought an initial 6 month Contract with an extension to 18 months if certain pre determined criteria had been achieved in that first period. Carrot for Derbyshire with the extra 12 month Contract, but City not being stuck with a player who couldn’t adapt to returning to UK football. A potential Win/Win option (although he will take up an outfield Senior player berth for the remainder of this season)?

Lets see who leaves to make room for him, I have seen him play a few times and his positional play in the box was excellent and he can take central defenders out of position

The trouble with Young is, he seems so far away from the match day squad he may as well be on loan. I'd imagine Derbyshire is going to start or be on the bench most games. Angol will be cheap to release and could be the sacrificial lamb in all this.

The signing could also indicate that the money pot is running low, hence the signing of an unknown from Ireland and aging forward.

Pereira and Angol have produced nothing like the sort of form they showed towards the end of last season, Angol is injured again I'm with you let them go if anyone's interested.

I wouldn't like to think Cook is on his way out and we are relying on a 36 year old Matt Derbyshire and the rest of our misfiring squad to get us promoted.

Not sure our money pot has ever run high. The lad from Ireland could be a complete flop or turn out to be a coupe, Derbyshire could just be that missing cog that makes us tick, time will tell.
One thing is certain January is never the time to go shopping for a proven goalscorer, unless you have bags of cash

I hope we've saved enough for the one position we're crying out for, central midfield.

I agree and you can add Walker to list, doubt he’ll be fit again before Easter 6 games a season is no good to any team
