The back 4 wasn’t the problem, they were rarely troubled. it was our very strong midfield and front line struggling to break a league 1 reserve team down in the first half that was worrying.
It was only when Oliver was hauled off and Angol / Harratt played up top did it improve.

 

I think you are bang right about Smallwood, at his best when he quietly gets on with the job of breaking up play and keeping the ball moving. He will be on his game more with a fit Gilliead along side him in a midfield two. Gilly is another player who cops for unnecessary criticism. You hear people say "there's no end product" with him, forgetting that he hasn't played as a winger for quite some time. He plays in the middle with Smallwood, keeps the ball moving, holds onto it when necessary and if we do lose possession works his balls off to win it back. Mark Hughes obviously rates him and Ryan East is a young lad who will learn a lot off Smallwood and Gilliead.

You won't convince him, he's made up is mind and won't budge. I may be like that if I reach 67!

 

The back 4 played very well tonight in what was a very entertaining game. If we had to play the same back 4 on Saturday I would not be concerned at all.

Wednesday certainly didn't park the.bus tonight,that was a very entertaining game of football tonight far more enjoyable to watch than the snooze fest dished up on Saturday.
Best team won tonight with some very tidy performances.
More of that on Saturday please.

Impressive debut from Odusina, great goals from Young and I was very impressed with East and Chapman.

Thought Sutton really struggled, especially first half and it's just not happening for Oliver unfortunately.

 

Was Oliver up top alone?

 

Yes and he won his fair share of flick ons which set Young away a few times but missed an absolute sitter which probably shows where his confidence is

 

It's impressive that we have two completely different four man defences that both look extremely competent at this level. I thought Odusina was real class tonight and both fullbacks did well.

In a very open, enjoyable game we looked dangerous going forward but, of course, most L2 teams coming to VP won't attack us and leave the sort of space we saw tonight.

Oliver looks a fish out of water in this team, so far. Angol looked far more effective as the lone target man when Oliver was hooked, and immeasurably better than when played wide left.

 

Yes. Apart from a couple of decent headed flick-ons he was massively ineffective.
He had a good headed chance that he put wide, which should have been buried, and a comical one when he fell over and actually cleared the ball for the defence. He is looking a rather forlorn figure at the moment.
