said it all along, we don’t have the personnel for 4-2-3-1 with these strikers. Cook and Oliver need a partner.

we need to build a system around either/both of those two as Oliver is here on a three year deal and won’t be going anywhere.

Harratt with Cook looks the best option short term though.

4-2-3-1 looks nice on paper but where has it ever got us? Nowhere. Lots of possession but slow build up, frustration and not enough chances created.

We’ll have to take a few beatings at times but if you have a good CM core, 4-4-2 is absolutely fine.

Hughes next job is trying to ascertain which of East, Songoo, Gillead or Sutton is the best CM partner for Smallwood. Ideally we’d sign someone but seems unlikely as Walker will be back at some point.

 

Have you any idea who Odusina is? I'm pretty sure he's a centre back and Songo'o has played there for about 3/4s of his career.

It means the 4-2-3-1 you are yearning for hasnt worked. We had the lowest xG from open play in the country using it (early days but warning signs are not good. Few chances, no goals, Oliver cast adrift in matches etc).

 

One of the most important KPIs in the modern game, that’s why.

I’m not yearning for any formation…other than as long it’s not 442 . It’s fine for a last 20 min change as long as one has the personnel , but it’s weak for 80% of the game. I did ask for examples of any team that plays 442 as a club / manager policy . Nobody came up with an answer . That says an awful lot. If professional managers don’t / won’t use it there is a reason why.

 

Yeah but when was promotion decided after ten games? We reverted to the mean last season. The xG soon dropped.

All xG does is reinforce what we see with our own eyes.m but puts quantifiable numbers on it.

Under Derek we bossed teams, the xG was good to support it to September, but the performances soon dipped, as did our xG.

This year we’ve been dull as dishwater with 4-2-3-1 and created nothing. Poor Oliver trudging around like he’s the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Hughes isn’t thick though. We have a performance analyst don’t we? Why else would we go out and bring in Banks - to give us that wide option. He looks a cracking player.

The early signs with 4-4-2 have been great. Beat Hartlepool after switching to it and out xG’d Blackburn during a wonderfully entertaining first half in which we hit the post and created several other good chances.

second half we struggled to contain Dack, Markenday et al, but Hughes will be pleased i reckon. Offered an attacking threat again.
