From a recent interview, Collins alluded to the situation where he was included in the 'recruitment committees' sessions - But did he have any actual input, and was it listened to ?

Further - @Kevin1954 wasn't offering a 'complete History' of Peterboro's strategy, just a tidy summary leading to where that strategy is now. I thought that was plain to see ?
Peterboro' didn't plough £000's in from the off - It took some lessons to be learned first - In that IF you want the best available, then you have to up the Ante, and invest a little more, accepting any loss will also be more. The plan is that profit far outweighs any losses. Without quoting various figures (Again !!), it appears that plan is working.

 

Great summary Chris, from everything I have read/heard/watched, supported with evidence from @Park bantam , others and myself in EAnglia for over 20 years, that’s how it originated and grew overtime.
Whether one likes the self sustainable model or not it certainly works for them. Even though Peterborough catchment area is huge, it’s very very sparcially populated area, proven by their low average attendances. In a nutshell it keeps them going!

 

Not only that Kev - But looking at Peterboro's League Position over the last 25 years or so reflects where that strategy has got them - not withstanding the income from transfers. Yes, their position on the field changes - But the income keeps on rising.
NB - Isn't this why Burnley are a Yoyo Club ? They DON'T blow all their new found wealth when they get it - They hold a tidy sum back, time and time again. Better than any personal Pension fund, or what ?

I think the big problem with this philosophy/strategy is the level we are coming in at. We are looking for freebies or almost free and hoping to improve the squad or sell on in the future.
This is ok but maybe 1 in a 1000 go for bigish money, to get consistently higher transfer fees as Peterborough do we need to spend more in the fist place. The ratio might then be 1 in 10 go for decent money.
It's not my money to spend so all I can do is talk and imagine like the rest of us on here, maybe the plan is to develop ourselves gradually so we are in a position to speculate more in the future.
The one thing I am confident of is that if we want 1 million pound transfers in the future we will need to be spending a quarter of that in the first place and tying players into 3 or 4 year deals, 2 years isn't enough time to develop and attract interest and then be able to hold the cards. As we are witnessing with Charlie now, if we had at least 2 more years on his deal we could afford to hold on and be more aggressive with offers.

 

Can't agree with this even if I'm not entirely convinced by the plan, we've spent a lot of money. Not really looking for freebies?
