Sparks was at the play off final to watch Harratt and a couple of other players. McLaughlin out of contract but offered a new deal. He should be one we are pushing for.

Also confirmed there are a few more deals to announce and a few very close.

He was asked his opinion and gave answer. He only explained the plain obvious and gave listeners an insight into why Doyle is back. To be our number 2, to push Lewis on and to coach the kid whose 3rd choice.

37 year old player/coaches dont come in to be 1st choice. You should know this.

I get the feeling we are waiting the outcome of offers made to POC, Watt and Vernham before moving on to better things (hopefully).

While our signings thus far have been different and interesting, I stand by my comments about had we signed Barrow, Swindon and forest green cast offs, aswell as resigning foulds and hendrie under McCall, bowyer or Adams then I'm fairly sure the reaction on here would be somewhat different to what it is now.

As it stands, in my opinion anyway, the squad is only a par with last year at best, let's hope the "competitive" side of the budget is yet to be spent.

His loan expired, not the same thing as either being recalled or released to be fair.

The positive for me is that this is a player that we clearly wanted and we went early to make sure we got him. Sparks said last night that contact was first made with Huddersfield and Kian and his family 6-8 weeks ago.

Think all 3 are gone to be honest. East certainly in the cast off bracket, but Platt was Barrows best defender, some say best player. Hard to judge Young due to age and the fact unless both were injured, there wasnt a chance he started above Matt or Stevens. I don't really buy into judging players from their last clubs, especially at this level. The consistency is very rarely there for players in L2, the ones that have it dont stay at this level for long.

But this summer 10 years back, we'd just spent a year hovering around the relegation zone with Parkinson. Signed Darby and Jones from Rochdale, who had won 8 games all season and were rock bottom. McArdle had just been in a poor Aberdeen side finishing 9th in Scotland with only 9 wins all season. All worked out pretty well to say they had poor seasons before joining City. Think it depends on who is spotting the talent and where they fit into a system.

The reaction would have been different under Bowyer or Adams as they are experienced heads at this level, with a known backroom team behind them (usually) who have had multiple seasons managing at L1/2 levels with success in the past. Hughes is fresh at this end of the game, so there's less expectation to nail the scouting of the level at his first attempt, compared to someone like Adams who's been assembling similar level squads in the scottish champ to L1/2 since 2007 and still signed over the hill dross.

Do you think the same about Sutton, given his deal is the same as Hendrie's?

One thing we won't see until later on is the big club loan signings. This is where the Mark Hughes affect will really kick in

I think with Foulds and Sutton, they're a couple of years younger and so have a bit more scope for development than Hendrie so they make slightly more sense.

I think people waiting for that “ Marquee signing” forget we signed Walker there won’t be many better signings than that in league two this year

I think it's different on a manager by manager basis.

Derek Adams gave out short term contracts, that was his preference.

Mark Hughes gives out longer term contracts, that's his preference.

I don't think there is a 'these days' aspect to it, I just think that's how these guys operate. They're fundamentally different, and at opposite ends of the spectrum.

FWIW, I think a 2 year deal is likely to indicate back up, because that's fairly short term for what Hughes is doing.

I think we'll sign more experienced players as the window goes on, but 'marquee', probably not.

There's nothing to indicate Hughes is making 'big' signings, they're all just targeted.

It's League Two, we don't need massive names.

Ancient Gary Jones was the best midfielder we've had in years, we don't need players any more famous/bigger than him, and he's a Rochdale lifer.

Hanson and Wells were a non-league/Carlisle reject pairing, again, nothing suggests we need marquee names, we just need the skills that compliment the other players.
