When yugoslavia went into civil war there were 3 different factions you were either bosnian serb bosnian croat or bosnian Muslim who all fought against each other whilst fighting with each other in certain regions .

 

Which ended up as Bosnia, serbia and Croatia. Three countries. In terms of nationality not race if he was born in Bosnia he’s Bosnian

 

But at the time of his birth there wasn't a Bosnia it was yugoslavia.

 

I'ts been a while since I've been down this rabbit hole but here goes.

To begin to grasp the Balkans then one has to start with Constantine moving the Capitol to Constantinople as was in the 4th century as the Christians were made the official religion, then move on to the Crusades and the tensions with Rome in particular the second Crusade IIRC, included in amongst that Rome's refusal to help in certain instances against the Muslim pressure on them. Then onto WWII and the attempted ethnic cleansing of the Eastern Orthodox Serbs by the Roman Catholic Croat regime of Paveliĉ.

This has moved people about for centuries creating the tribalism still to be found in the area. Nothing clear cut in the Balkans. The word Byzantine for a torturous and interwoven subject can be perhaps traced to this interwoven make up of the area to the point where there is also a Serbo-Croat language.

TL;DR It's a mess.

Albania has been fought over and invaded by almost all neighbouring states at some point. Kosovans are almost without exception ethnic Albanians just to add to the confusion.

Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka both have an ancestry from Kosovo but as ethnic Albanians. It got them into trouble with their goal celebrations against Serbia - the double headed eagle of Albania. Xhaka's brother, also a Swiss national plays for Albania.

Kosovo, although fighting for independence (it isn't universally recognised as an independent state yet) still has very strong ethnic ties with Albania. All Kosovo schoolchildren have to go on a trip to Albania before they are 18. I met hundreds of them at a famous castle site in Albania last October. Nice kids, all wanted to practice their English. They were the only other foreign tourists we saw the whole time apart from a party of Chinese in Vlore and 6 Germans in Kruja.

It is a beautiful country, full of corruption, car washes (the state of the roads mean there is one every 10 minutes) and great food and wine. Beer excellent too. Cheap as chips once you are there. Very friendly people.
