You’ve not watched him if you think he does the work of 1 player he never moves

No Calum Cooke, been the best player in midfield by a country mile IMO of course.

He's still the best centre back we've got. By some distance.

as someone pointed out last time Niall's pace and movement were discussed - he's a static Canavan :joy:

Not our fans surely? Next you’ll be saying some said Reece Burke would play for England ;)

No, not for me. Drifts in and out of games and if man marked he disappears. One of those who'll have a good game now and then. And if he's our only creative midfielder we're too easy to nullify.

I think shoe horning Callum Cooke in is part of our problem. Don't get me wrong he's a decent player, but in the role he is in he needs to be bursting into the box and backing up the lone striker more. As soon as Angol is fit he will be out of the team. A 3/5/2 fits him better (sitting deeper behind two central midfield players) as he's a "quarterback" style midfielder rather than box to box.

Why would Cooke make way for Angol?

So he's a decent player but you'd drop him? Surely you build the team around the few decent ones? And we ain't got many.

I know that's the popular view but I just don't see it. He's fine if given time and space but he disappears from games too easily for me. And he hardly ever scores, Saturday excepted. We need goals from midfield and they just don't have it in them.

You're only as good as the ones around you let you be. Cooke is not the problem, the dross around him though....

That's a very valid point, and in a better side he might be far more effective. But it's very much a 'might' rather than a 'would' for me.

i think he would, players who read a game better definitely help the players with an eye for a pass. As it stands, without Vernam we have not one player who makes anything like an intelligent run off the ball.

I do agree with your original post though, but i would swap Cook for Cooke. I think Cook is the epitome of league 2 averageness.

Yes, I'm in two minds about him too, but he gets so little to work with and so little support. And I do admire how he continues to work hard in games despite the above.
