Guess the Premier League forgot to mention its latest Covid-19 precaution... the ball has to be at least 2m over the line for it to count...

    The HawkEye statement read:

During the first half of Aston Villa v Sheffield United match at Villa Park, there was a goal line incident where the ball was carried over the line by Aston Villa goalkeeper…Nyland. The match officials did not receive a signal to the watch nor earpiece as per the Goal Decision System (GDS) protocol. The seven cameras located in the stands around the goal area were significantly occluded by the goalkeeper, defender and goalpost.

This level of occlusion has never been seen before in over 9,000 matches that the Hawk-Eye Goal Line Technology system has been in operation. The system was tested and proved functional prior to the start of the match in accordance with the IFAB Laws of the Game and confirmed as working by the match officials. The system has remained functional throughout. Hawk-Eye unreservedly apologises to the Premier League, Sheffield United, and everyone affected by this incident.

If only they'd had a camera looking along the goal line.

When you look at that image you can see how the camera's used for the technology could have been blocked.

Your right, the system works fine as long as you play matches without those pesky nets, and those posts, and the players and the officials, and anything else that could occlude the view.

Ref should have given the goal and then referred to VAR, in mitigation could also say that keeper was bundled over the line while in possession of the ball..

And if the Blades miss out on a Europe spot by two points...

In fairness though, it’s not the first f@ck up by automated technology this season, so other teams will be queuing up to point out where they’ve had decisions costing them matches.

    Exactly!
In cricket, do batsmen "walk" anymore? Love progressive technology when it works, but when it doesn't, it just highlights how much of the personal aspect has been taken out of the game. Having said that, I wouldn't be suprised if the ref forgot to turn on his watch, or the hawk-eye bloke was checking his Tinder!

Reminds me of a time I was playing Sunday cricket, and was asked to step in for a few overs umpiring. I realised I hadn't brought out my stones to count the balls, so instead, managed to pick 6 daisies. I was holding them in my hand, when the gust of wind created by the bowler running in, blew them onto the ground. I bent down to pick them up, when of course I hear the cry "Ow is zaaaat?". "Not out!" said I (as is the norm in Sunday cricket when you're umpiring against your own batsman). The bowler turned round and saw me picking up the daisies, and went nuts because he said I wasn't even looking. "Going down leg" I replied. I don't think he spoke to me all game :)

Sheffield United have been on the wrong end of some howlers this season.
