Goal scoring midfielder? Really? In all his years as a professional footballer, he’s had one season where he scored more than a few goals.

He hit 13 the season before last of which 6 were penalties and included a hattrick of pens against Scunny. He scored a goal against us too, but I can’t say I recall much about him TBH. But throughout his career, he rarely scores more than a couple a season

 

Yeah, but the Sky reporter is talking rubbish. The attacking midfielder for Gills that season was Dack. He tended to play as a defensive midfielder or as a central midfielder. However, he did go up for most corners/set-pieces and benefitted from knock-downs

 

Isn't that simply because no system is 100% successful, you still have to do it well.

You could turn it around and ask why the system where managers have total control isn't used everywhere if it's as great as is made out.

In general though I don't really understand why the system we're using is so hard to understand.

Given the short term nature of management then all managers are expected to work with players who weren't necessarily their signings. McCall for example was expected to work with the core of players which had been left by Parkinson.

What difference does it make whether the players are signed by a former manager or someone in a position like Abbott? As long as they're good players, with the right character and fit the style of play the club want to move forward with then it shouldn't make a difference to me.

 

Coach might be perfectly ready to work with a pre-pepared squad if he felt it were good enough.

 

Slightly concerned about Josh. Falling out with managers! I hope Greg has done due diligence on him. ie spoke to managers about him. We will just have to trust Greg on this one, we are desperate for midfielder and it looks like we are prepared to compete with other clubs to get what we want, I like that.

Tbh I'd not looked much into his career history before making that statement, and he hasn't scored many other than one season. However that was his first season as an attacking midfielder rather than his usual position as a holding midfielder and he's played 120 games at championship level.

I couldn't care less how many were penalties or in one game, do you suddenly chalk them off with certain criteria? They can smack him in the face and deflect in for all I care, a goal's a goal. He scored more in that one season, than Law did in his career in English football according to Wiki.

Just been reading his twitter account, he is quite an open. Picked up an injury last season, came back too early and then out again. So not really had a chance to display his best football. I think it shows metal to come north, he is a proper Essex boy. I also think he wants to play attacking football might have made the difference between us and other clubs who have been after him. Think he is getting married, as photos of stag do in Vegas. We will have to see if he settles, move north, married. The lad has backbone.

 

Conte's problem seemed to be that they wasn't spending 50m on a full back like City nothing to do with them signing top players. He still had a say in transfers.

For me a manager or head coach has to have the final say in player recruitment.

 

He's been average everywhere he's been but has had one decent goalscoring season and even then his own fans didn't seem to rate him. Sounds like another Dom Poleon to me.

You know what Fordy you accused me of looking backward and to an extent I agree with you about managers and head coaches. However times change as Stuart said yesterday in an interview more and more teams are going down this the continental route. We have to change our thinking

The point is you can’t say they didn’t rate him when he swept up the awards for that season. As with Riley he should be judged on what he does for us

 

The only thing that has changed is a recruitment team look for players and these players as discussed in meetings including the manager or head coach. However, the manager has the final say.

Here, it seems to be Edin has the final say and that won't work.
