So that would suggest to me if this is going on around the country with regards big clubs trawling all the young talent we as a club have very little chance of finding a diamond.

 

But that’s the issue Dave. Our youth set up hasn’t been good enough over the years. Yes, we’ve unearthed a few kids (under13s) and they’ve gone on to be poached by bigger clubs.

As mentioned previously, when was the last time a kid forced his way into our team and became a first team regular? We can’t afford to spend big money on players, so why not try something different. It only takes 1 ‘find’ for it to be worth it

Not good enough yet we brought the likes of a Wisdom, Delph, Heaton, Cleverley, Green, Richards, Hamilton through our youth squad.
The development sqyad is totally a different thing tryinv to find a gem amongst the average 18/19 year old.

 

Nobody can force these kids to sign for these big clubs even though in some cases they offer parents financial inducements. I think if the kids and their parents can be convinced their is a better chance of getting on whilst still getting a good education we can pick some of them up. According to Drury that is already happening

Isn’t this the point of doing the exercise we are Dave? If the talented youngsters get snapped up at 15/16 and we never get a chance of signing them, why not look at them again 2/3yrs later when they ultimately get released.

I’m sure you were one of those that would have liked us to have signed Luke Hendrie. Another boy snapped up by a big club and released a few yrs later. These boys get released all the time and I genuinely believe there will be some gems in there. How much did Pogba cost Man U to re-sign him?

And it doesn’t always have to be the elite clubs either. Bradley Dack spent 5yrs with Chalton’s academy before being released. He spent another 2yrs in Gillingham’s before breaking into their 1st team. Now look at him. These players can and do get found. Yes, finding diamonds amongst the stones isn’t easy, but we’ve got to give it a go

 

But most of those boys were really young when they left us. Delph, for example, left us at just 12. Cleverley was 11. Wisdom and Green were a little older at 15, but neither were anywhere near our 1st team.

The fact remains that the big clubs will always take the cream from the top. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be looking to re-sign these boys if they ultimately get released before reaching their potential.

It’s not like we’re dropping our Academy to focus on the Dev Squad

 

The talented youngsters are getting picked up at 7/8 not at 15/16,the lad Elliot Moire we were linked withlastcseason had been with Leicester fron the age of 8.
Once agian this is not the develoment squad they are hoping will unearth a diamond, completely different debate, they are hoping to get the likes of Robinson, Patrick, Hanson, Pybus and Gibson who have not made the grade at their previous clubs and develope them on to sell on.

 

Oh come on Dave, he’s an ambitious boy who many on here (and Man U forums) think we are lucky to get. And you think he’s not going to be earning decent money?

Its still a fact they were young kids who were in our Academy squad, whether they we picked up young or otherwise.
They were not develoment players as we didn't have one until Archie sold the dream to Julian & Mark.

 

We all know they are two separate things one is speculating on players released from bigger clubs. The other is bringing through our own youngster. In the interview with Drury he said Edin himself had to come to a meeting with parents of young children.
They are separate things but form a pathway to the first team and by prioritising young players it shows parents and kids we could be the club to join

 

And like I said, it works at times. Dack got released from an academy, spent a couple more years in someone else’s and now look at him.

Just look at Fàbregas. Was in the youth set-up at Barcelona and released because they didn’t think he’d make it. Arsenal took him on and put him in their Dev Squad for a couple of years, before forging a career at the Gunners and costing Barca tens of millions to re-sign him.
