Does anyone actually understand the model? I’m not sure the club have ever suggested we bring in a bunch of kids, train them up and sell them all. If we introduce 5/6 players and they reach their potential with us. We’d only need to accept an offer for one of them to pay for the scheme. Yes, we could get offers for the others, but we aren’t obliged to sell the others unless we need to.

There’s no reason, as Chris says, why we couldn’t sell one to pay for the rest staying and building a team around them with some experience (i.e. the Cherry/Dolan years).

Not really Dave. Rahic has made it clear that we have to make ourselves self sustainable. He never said we would sell every player that comes in and improves.

At some point, we have to have a team that is good enough to get promoted and stay together. Hence his comment that we wouldn’t want to rebuild the whole team if we went up.

If we got 1 excellent player that brought in a massive sum of £3m upwards (like a John Stones perhaps), it would pay for itself for the next few years

 

Of course, the players may want to leave. I was meaning we wouldn’t HAVE to sell unless we needed to (for both financial reasons and player wishes).

Some of the players are being persuaded to join on the basis of restarting their careers with us, so yes, they may want to leave.

 

When you think of how much we have benefited over the last few years from sales of youth and in the case of a Nahki young and developed players.Think how we may benefit in the future now we are putting a lot more effort in. Can only be a good thing

But that's not their model is it Chris, if these lads were good enough to hold their own or be above average in league one they would be selling them on, or that's what I'm given to understand.
My understanding it that we develop young talent that has slipped through the net and if they show promise and other teams show interest and offer fees we will sell them, I don't think for one minute if we unearthed another McCall or Hendrie they would be staying at Valley Parade for further season, it might have worked 20 years ago I cant see any kid who's done well and a bigger club comes sniffing being happy to play league one football.

 

OK well accept Nhaki Wells but that was hardly one we unearthed, I think Mega kept pushing him along with Dave Baldwin and Phil took the lad under duress, it was far from these guys model of developing young talent.
We have as you say benefited over the years from the likes of Wisdom, Cleverley, Delph, Heaton, Green ETC and the rest these kids were taken before many if any of them we in their late teens, as you say in most cases they were youth players that a Premiership team took a gamble (not really a gamble with their money) so if it came off they got a good future prospect and we got a steady flow of add ons.
The last players who we could say we developed and played regular first team football were Dean Richards and Des Hamilton, Tomlinson played around a dozen games when Manchester United took him.

Yes I accept that, but I don't think it is as easy as some are thinking it will be, we shall see.

Nobody is saying it will be easy there will be a lot of failures. But if we get a name for a good pathway to first team football the better players we will attract

 

Fair enough, Dave. However, although I didn't say it - I would hope that 'cracking team' would be good enough to get promotion, and therefore City would then be a Championship club. Either way, if the lads play well for City, we win. If we sell for serious Dollar, we win.

 

Luke O'Brien & Joe Colbeck played regularly. I think we got a decent fee for Colbeck.

Jacko didn't want Nakhi, I think it was Baldwin who pushed it through for the development squad. Parky gave Nakhi a chance and he took it.
