Away v Grimsby Town

The more you look at it the worse it gets. You've got to go with Vaughan and Donaldson and Scannell is on too much of a wedge not to play but how you configure the midfield to make it work goodness only knows. 4-4-2 sounds archaic but seems the most simplistic. And simple is good in the khazi league.

 

We aren’t going to get any easy games this season that’s for sure, our previous stint in L2 taught us all that. They beat one of the relegation favourites on Saturday so I’m just hoping our strike force click tomorrow and the mariners defence folds....

 

Can't remember where I read it (maybe on here) but someone pointed out that Man City have spent zillions on fullbacks who can both attack with pace and defend. They're crucial to 4-3-3. And yet we haven't got them. Bowyer tried to play the system last week with Mellor, who surprised me at how cumbersome he looked going forward, and Henley, whom he picked to counter their right winger, not for any attacking potential. In the event he was another round peg in a square hole. I don't rate Henley as a defender but if we're going to go with pacy attacking fullbacks he might be a better bet than Mellor. But our left hand side is a mess in any event. And our midfield is just mediocre however we go. Bowyer has an awful lot to resolve.

 

I think Mellor is more a threat going forward than he is defending. He's looked useful in an advanced position but looks dodgy at right back. Henley would be worth a go at right back. What wouldn't we give for a Stephen Darby now.

 

Well, let's see what transpires tomorrow. I'm torn between liking GB, which I do, and starting to have doubts. He's got a huge job on and we should give him time, but team selections like last Saturday are hard to fathom.

 

Disagree about Mellor looking dodgy at R/B. I really rate him, was named best R/B in league 2 a couple of years ago. He was never troubled last week, unlike Henley who had a couple of dodgy moments in first half on the left.

I think GB is a bit of a stubborn character. His comments in the T&A this week sounded a bit like he was having a go at those who were questionong him. It wouldn't surprise me if he went with the same starting eleven as last week.

 

We'll see when we play better teams in the division.

 

Man City also have 70 per cent plus worth of possession every game no matter who they play. Full backs are not as exposed as ours.

Ours have to be able to defend as we will give the ball away. Longridge is supposed to be good going forward at left back from comments from his old side on social media. Let’s give him a go and Mellor is more than capable at right back. Scored a lot of goals from that position

 

He only works with the players 5 days a week. What would he know?

 

And yet he still thought it a good idea to pick Doyle to play the no10 role AND keep him there until the 78th minute??????

 

So did Hopkin and he got it wrong

 

So did Parky and he got it right?

 

He’s allowed to experiment if he’s seen it work. Not every decision he will make will be the right one.

 

Can yo get a ticket on the gate at Grimsby or do you have to go to ticket office - anyone know?
