Hasn’t he just taken a business decision to try and protect his current investment?

He could take a business decision to sign John Marquis in order to protect his investment, but it's not going to happen.

Making the decision to try to keep Payne is part one, and part one alone isn't worth a single point or penny.

Getting it over the line, now, that's the thing.

I just can not work out the big love in for him because of it. He is doing it to protect his investment not because he cares.

Have a think about this point of view, which I think is spot on! ‘As for full-time recruits, targets must be persuaded to join a club whose League One status is far from assured - never an easy sell at this stage. There are plenty of balls in the air’. Simon Parker in the T&A https://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/sport/17357166.why-january-window-is-balancing-act-for-bantams/

So how can Rupp ‘Step up’, just explain how you think he can do so!

    Definitely.

But it's kind of a coup in terms of how likely it seemed we'd lose him, and for me I was afraid that even if we kept Ball, he, Doyle and Miller would almost certainly lack something.

Defying expectations in managing to secure Payne for the rest of the season is why people are so pleased; the fact that Rupp's ambitions for this club are so tightly aligned to ours is also a positive.

Not every chairman has gone the apparent extra mile when threatened with their club going backwards.

Remember the sale of Windass and JJ?

Rupp could have easily said 'I want rid, run the club on a shoestring, you should have enough to stay up', but he didn't.

Exactly why some are demanding a "target man"

Of course he is protecting his investment, but I think he also cares. The two stances are not exclusive . My understanding from what he said when Rahic was pushed through the exit door, was one of embarrassment and anger that his name had been attached to the shambles that was Bradford City. He could have just upped sticks and left. He also invested in the summer, unfortunately a good chunk of that money has been flushed down the toilet. Plus he not only has to provide funds for players in the expensive January window, but also finance the club’s overdraft.

In my view he deserves credit for his willingness to do that.

Why is it always.. "We can't compete with. x"

There is a whole host of reasons he's gone there:

    1. He is being paid more
    2. He has been guaranteed more playing time
    3. He wants to play for a promotion chasing team
    4. It's probably a nicer place to live
    5. it's possibly closer to friends or family
    6. We decided we wanted O'Conner rather than him
    7. Hopkin doesn't think he is worth what his agent was asking

There's 7 I have come up with in less than a minute. It's not always that we can't compete with wages, we clearly can as we beat Peterborough to 3 plays in the summer and they said they couldn't compete.

Agree with the love in comment, but....
Protecting his interests means that he’s also protecting our interests. Whatever his intentions, if he’s choosing to protect his interests (at extra personal cost), then it benefits us.
That doesn’t mean to say he’s going to continue funding or investing time and money to push us on beyond this season, but it does tick the boxes for what needs doing right now.
So far. We still need further strengthening otherwise we’re no better off than before the window opened.

Whatever his motives he has acted wisely, we've seen precious little of that in the last couple of years so keep up the good work Stefan.

I can agree with both these posts a few more players of quality would certainly help Hopkin keep us in league one, but would come at a premium.
Where as a statment of intent in the closed season would convince me more, but I honestly believe in trying to protect his investment he will sell the club if there are interested parties out there who would but the cub.

He is on around £12k a week at Huddlesfield so certainly 'near' the £15k some have said

Whilst I agree with you wholeheartedly in many respects, the 'other places are nicer to live' argument doesn't wash with me. There are plenty of beautiful places to live within easy driving distance of Bradford and if it is city life a player is looking for, Leeds and Manchester are also an easy commute.

Of course there is, however it was just an example, also I think players should live within the district they play in as this shows they are committed to the club.

fair play to Stefan, he's stepped up and ensured we can keep our best players for the season. I'm not sure it's worth a 'thank you' but I'm certainly grateful that they are still here, as we would be significantly weaker had Payne (and OB) left. still work to do, though.
