I'll challenge this every time I see it. Two problems:

    A) his lack of goals is not the main issue.

    B) all of your pros are not the reality that I see. He's not doing any of the things that you say he is. If he was, the lack of goals wouldn't be an issue.

He's not 'running defenders ragged', he's not 'running the channels', hes not 'getting in the right positions', he's winning very little in the air against defenders, he's having very little material impact on our attacking play. 'He won throw ins' isn't really going to cut it for any type of legacy when his time is up at VP.

I agree, it's his all round play and contribution that is seemingly getting less and less. Early season I thought he looked promising, even without really being a goal threat but he's dropped off slightly and isn't winning as much up there.

Early days though so hopefully it's just a case of it being a bedding in period and even if not, he should be a decent enough rotation option with the other strikers we've got.

On Powells energy levels, did anybody notice as soon as the full time whistle went he dropped onto his arse and was blowing like hell. Just don’t think he’d last 90 mins and would probably get injured again.

Well we have a difference of opinion which is absolutely fine but from what I see in the kop is exactly what I have mentioned above

You and others seem to be more bothered about him not scoring rather than his all round contributions and that's where things differ between fans thoughts.

What I will also add is if the assists he has to his name were goals instead I doubt this topic on him would actually being talked about.

Despite not scoring he is however contributing with his play and Assists and no one can say that isn't the case.

Powell is a great player to have from the bench but there is little to no chance he can play 60 mins never mind 90 that maybe some suggest.

A fully fit Powell wouldn't even be playing in L1

I've bored people to tears on here with my insistence that a striker can be extremely effective without scoring goals so you're wrong on that score with me. I've already made that very clear on the post you replied to so I'm not sure why you're putting that remark on me.

I don't think he's contributing with his play. He's largely anonymous and when he is in and around the play he's been materially ineffective. I haven't seen any impact on the game from him at all. I'm not sure about these 'assists' you're referring to either.

But you're right, it boils down to each individual fan and what they feel they've seen with their eyes. I could do with someone sitting down with me at the game pointing out where he is contributing. I'm not seeing any of the stuff that some posters are referring too.

I don't think that's entirely true. Whilst there are some who will judge a striker on goalscoring and nothing else (which in itself is understandable), I think there has been a fair allowance for Beesley's lack of goals so far. Most criticism I've seen is about his all round game.

He should've scored one of if not both of the big chances vs Cambridge but aside from that, I can't recall a good chance being created for him.

Personally, I think he's regressing and having less of an influence with every passing week. His first few performances were encouraging but he's been a passenger for the last few games and we've looked more threatening when he's gone off the pitch. Fact is, our best performance in front of goal has come in a game where he hasn't played a minute.

So far his main praise is that he works really hard, but forgive me if I expect a number nine to score or make goals.

Me too. I wasn’t expecting a prolific goalscorer because I knew that wasn’t what he is. But from what I’d heard I thought we were getting a strong target man with a reputation for being aerially dominant, good at holding the ball up and excellent at setting up chances for others, as well as being a persistent presser. From what I’ve seen so far it’s only the last of those attributes I’m recognising.

Not sure he's been the success you say mate, looking at the above he's only been in double figures 4 times, with his best season being at BPA ?.
I'm not writing him off by any means, as many have said as a striker you thrive on goals so his confidence must be low with regards thatc side of his game.

For me it's his lack of basic footballing ability that's the biggest drawback. He rarely controls the ball well enough to do anything with it and when he does very little creativity follows. If he could make the ball stick when it's played to him he'd be an asset, but he can't. Where are you now Ashley Ward?

From what I can recall he has just one assist so far - the rather fortunate header that set up Sarce last Saturday. FotMob confirms this:

I’m surprised by the ‘aerial duals won’ stat tbh. But, for a primary striker, most of the other attacking stats are pretty disappointing.

Being a number 9 in an Alexander set up is a selfless task. Primarily by design it's a role built on graft and doing a job for the rest of the team. The two behind the 9 need to be on top of their game and yet I don't think Beesley has had the same partnership behind him in two consecutive games if memory serves. Hopefully Beesley gets the monkey off his back in the next game

That’s fair comment. But it’s not so much the lack of goals that concerns me, it’s the inability to keep hold of the ball, hold off big CBs and lay the ball off to others in a controlled manner. The difference in those aspects when Powell comes on is like chalk and cheese.
I’m beginning to wonder if we’ve signed another forward who likes to face goalwards and are asking him to be a back to goal, hold it up, target man. We’ve seen this so many times at City - Doyle, Vaughan and even Cooky to some extent were players who were primarily forward facing goalscorers but were asked to play hold up and struggled. Beesley seems too lightweight to shield the ball. He was bullied to death by Ness yesterday and couldn’t make the ball stick at all.

There's a slight problem with your post Ricky, you're using the plural of assist.

If you're going to admonish us all and pretend we don't have the footballing knowledge to see what you are clearly seeing then you'll have to get the facts right mate or no one will take you seriously.

How do people expect him to hold the ball up when the ball is often booted nowhere near him, and he's having to chase lost causes? Without sounding like Monkey here, I don't actually think we go longer when we have a target man who plays I think it is when Baldwin plays. He is obsessed with long balls and thinks he's Gerrard, When he was RCB his balls were pretty effective to the LWB, especially when Wright played. But since moving to the centre, his long balls have got worse and worse. For me, it wasn't Beesley not playing that made us play better football against Orient; it was Baldwin not playing and us not having to watch the ball go out for a throw-in and goal kick every two minutes. Also, Beesley has won a high percentage of his duels; get accurate balls into him, and you will see better all-round play from him.

Unfortunatly the risk side of the game is being stiffled thanks to the likes of Pep etc, even under Sparky, him saying whilst we have possession the opposition can't score, so you hold the ball until you're certain its a positive pass/movement.
Personally I much prefer to have players who can think for themselves and are prepared to rely on their individual skill to change a game or created a chance for fellow teammates.
Having said the above its difficult to even suggest criticising Alexander for the job he's doing at Valley Parade in the time he's been here.

I've never particularly rated Baldwin's long balls tbh; reminds me a bit of Elliot Watt when on the ball, a bit of a showman who thinks he should be in the PL. I'm all for him defensively as an RCB and think he was our best defensive player last season, but think he's very overrated on the ball. Notts fans said the best thing you did was make him go long quickly, as he was a bomb scare playing it out of the back.

RCB I'd agree. In the middle he's often a liability.
