Be interesting to see the stats in the efl for how many goals are actually scored from crosses. I reckon it's a lot lower than people think. Crossing from deep when a defense is set is a very low percentage strategy for creating chances. For any defense worth their salt it's usually meat and drink. We weren't particularly potent last season but in the early part of the season it felt like most of our goals came from busy interplay between the front three, picking up rebounds, harrying defenders and quick final 3rd passing. I worry that bringing in Beesey has changed our ethos back to the Cook days when the plan was get it wide, cross and hope Cook gets on the end. I thought Beesley would've been brought in to give us a more mixed approach but it seems we've bought a Cook type striker who doesn't score. Needs to change.

 

Hopefully, if Beesley does start on Saturday, watching tonight gave him a kick up the backside

 

Humphrys fantastic tonight. Always been a fan of his (admittedly without much evidence), and will be a good kick up the backside for Beesley.

Someone on X made a good point that Beesley clearly likes to do the stuff that “bores” Humps, maybe finding a way to play the two together would work? Not sure if GA would be willing to do it though.

 

Even if Humphrys played as a front 2 he's still be expected to work hard and press, it would just be that rather than leading the press he would be backing up Beesley which is just as vital. Alexander has done everything he can to give Humphrys a chance and making it clear what he needs to do, it's now down to the player to show he can do it on a consistent basis over a number of months

Both are a typical example of a league 1 player, lots of good qualities but a lack of consistency/quality in other areas holds them back. If you could combine Beesley's workrate, attitude and mindset with Humphrys' technical ability you'd have an amazing player who would be playing higher than league 1.

 

We are short on right wing backs...

I think he looks worse than Vadaine Oliver. Just cut our losses and drop him

 

He was ineffective again today and never looked like scoring. But tbf to him, the service in the box to him was terrible. I think he had one half chance at the near post which was very difficult to convert, and that was it.

 

This is his heat map of the game, with most of his touches coming just over the half way line on the right channel.

This certainly isn't the map you'd want to see from hour Number 9. Questions have yo be asked if we A) are we using him the right way? B) is he capable of the link up we need from a lone forward? C) what service is he expected to get when he is barely in the box?

 

Interested to see Nick Powell’s heat map today. Was he getting in the box any more that Beesley?
