You would like to think so @Idlebantam@Idlebantam

Welch been offered a two year deal from what I am hearing this afternoon.

Powell is 1yr heavily based on appearances would be one of the highest earners if he plays.

I have a feeling if he signs that Powell will have a great season for us.

I'm not suggesting for a minute that there's a chance of us getting him, but it's interesting that when asked yesterday about the Owen Bailey contract situation, MCann said they are no further forward with it. Last week he was saying they were very close to getting it done. I wonder if his agent is stalling things to see what interest might develop over the next couple of weeks or so.

I think it may be clubs weighing up their wages in line with the financial rules now that it is calculated in real time. For example, if we sign Bailey, we need to sell xxx or not offer zzz but we also need another player in another position.

Last season a club would have just signed him and figured it out before the end of August but they can't do that this season.

Every club has already submitted something called the Pre-Season SCMP Submission. They were sent to the EFL in June. In short, they demonstrate, with a load of assumptions at this stage, how the clubs will stay within the SCMP rules over the coming season. Those assumptions include lots of financial stuff - forecasts of ticket revenues, existing costs of the manager and playing staff including future bonuses, forecasts of commercial income, assumptions about transfers and player costs linked to them, equity injections from the owners. I guess some of those assumptions will be on the heroic side at this stage! The important bit and this is what I think is meant by the phrase 'live' or 'real time' monitoring is that clubs have to inform the EFL of the impact of assumptions becoming realities and the impact those changes will have.. From my reading of the Regs, the EFL will be able to see quickly whether the SCMP limit is likely to breached.

So yes, it may well be that clubs have to work a bit smarter so that they better understand the impact of transfers on the finances of the business overall and the SCMP controls in particular and not just stick their heads in the sand. In extremis, the EFL has the final say on player registrations and the SCMP Regs allow them to stop a registration if the SCMP limits are likely to be breached. That's a pretty heavy stick which the EFL can wield and I doubt any club would want to get into that position. Gone are the days when the main issue of recruiting a new striker is what kind of pizza he prefers!

Fingers crossed our lack of activity in that area is because we are waiting for Owen...;)

So, what I was understanding is that if a club decides to not renew it's three lowest earners and then recruits three people at the top of the wage structure, which would potentially put them over budget, they would need to declare this. I think that's in line with what you're saying.

So in principle, could this mean that if the assumptions a club has made in the summer turn out to be wide of the mark and they end up in breach of the SCMP limits, they end up with a transfer embargo for January?

I guess a potential problem could occur if a club signed a player and then the EFL in ‘real time’ refused to register him?
You end up with a Contract Dispute. If the player wasn’t registered, then they would be deprived of the opportunity to earn bonuses which would be available if they were in the squad.
Arguably the player could potentially end up seeking compensation from the league?
The club could say that they acted in good faith and that they would wish to honour the contract. That they are being penalised for something which has only just come to light.
At the point they signed the player, all the conditions appeared to be in place.
The PFA, would probably become involved.
Could be a recipe for confusion, if not chaos.

Don't get your hopes up Serg, quite a few Donny fans seem to think he'll end up at Preston to replace Whiteman, others think possibly Bolton as they haven't replaced Wintle yet.

Yeh i only see him leaving Donny for Leicester and Sheff Wed in our league. Surely Championship clubs looking at him too.

    PS Cardiff? (Wintle)

I'm not a lawyer so can't really comment on the legal aspects. Some form of dispute may be possible but imo the clubs would be responsible for the situation.

The new arrangements have been known by clubs since early May and before the transfer window opened when clubs appŕoved the new regime. Clubs should already be fully au fait with the implications of the new regime as should the lawyers advising the agents. If clubs can't calculate the impact of a player transfer and don't know that their SCMP limit is likely to be breached, they need to appoint a new CEO or FD. Alternatively, the owner could simply dip into his pocket and make good the shortfall.

It's certainly possible. Forecasting the future is hardly a precise science and I'd suspect many assumptions will be wrong! But once a club is aware of a potential breach of the SCMP limit, they are expected to take action to bring it back into line. That's little different from the previous regime. An embargo is one possibility as Oxford have found out but I guess it would only happen after the club has pursued other remedies.

There's a Paul Mullin interview in the Yorkshire Post today. It sounds like he was brought in with the idea of a formation change?

"I thought why not go and play at the top end of League One every week and chase another promotion type of thing. But then when I got there, the manager changed his mind about how he wanted to play, basically. It wasn't a fall-out or anything, he just changed his plans of what he thought once when he first brought me in and then that was it really.

I just didn't manage to establish myself there, which obviously is difficult (anyway) because halfway through the season, the team have been really successful all year at doing what they've done because they were in a play-off position. So it was always going to be (more) difficult when the gaffer didn't want to change from what he'd been doing, which was the plan at first."

I think maybe a few of us at the time mentioned going to 2 up top from memory? We did have Mullin, Wheatley, Humps, Swan, Powell and Jackson all having some time as a central striker. I guess the play might have been to move from 2 supporting mids and 1 striker, to having 1 number 10 behind 2 strikers and GA decided against it?

No, we are well covered up front, especially if Powell signs on.

We need to prioritise other areas with whatever budget we have remaining

I would, but i cant see us bringing in another striker until one leaves now, or Powell suddenly gets a better offer elsewhere.

Luton fans think they matched his Swansea wages when he signed for £1m last summer, they believe he is on about £11k per week. Going to be hard to find many L1 clubs willing to pay close to that. Can see him back at Wednesday.
