Disagreed with you then and I still do, he looked decent to me, tall and athletic, and preferable to the port vale guy who is/was on loan.

    Nothing from the club
He is 23 in September, so probably his last chance to make the grade at this level
If he signs let’s hope he grabs the opportunity with both hands
Probably costing the club very little

He is as you say nearly 23 and other than a few games with Forest Green nobody has taken him on loan. That goes against him, however the fact he has been kept on so Long at Everton suggest he may have something. I did see on the Forest green message board that he looked “disinterested “ chimes with the comment above

Still its a better option than the injury prone 32 year old released by Port Vale.

I don't disagree. He was a decent player but I seem to recall he was a bit mercenary. It's a while ago but I think we wanted to sign him but he wanted to wait and see if he could get a better offer elsewhere first

I hope it doesn't have to be one or the other, both are crap options.

GA's daily interview published today states that he wants 3 more signings, yet he believes he is 90/95% there with his squad.

That sounds like maybe 1 more he has in mind for his starting X1 and a couple of squad fillers, which is the category I would file either of these trialists in.

I reckon he is waiting for a loan player to be released by his parent club for a midfield slot, and 2 lower key signings for central defence and RWB cover?

Welch and Lewis likely as things stand with a possible CM loan.

Lewis is left back isnt he, surely we need right back. Wright and Touray good enough options on left.

He is right footed and Mansfield fans seem to rate him

Lewis has played all over in his career to be honest. Looks like he's had 90ish games at LWB/LB, 70ish at RWB/RB and 60ish in central midfield. If we bring in Lewis, he looks like someone who'll be on the bench to cover a lot of roles.

Feels like the window's hit the skids a bit, the latest rumours aren't very inspiring.

We need a proper first team-ready right wing back to compete with Josh, and that midfield ain't it.

Couple of high quality signings needed in the next couple of weeks, ASAP ideally.

The lad Green that we were linked to is apparently going to sign a new contract at Grimsby.

Indeed. Last summer, GA started his recruitment early and he had an almost complete squad by the time they went to Austria. Most other clubs didn't have that luxury. It was a great strategy which paid dividends imo and helped us to get out of the blocks very quickly and build up a healthy cushion by game 10. For the remainder of the season, 36 games, we averaged only 1.5 ppg which over a full season wouldn't have been enough for a play-off place. It was our first 10 games which changed things. It was whittled away over time but still got us into the play-offs which was a great outcome for our first season back in Lge 1.. Given where we are with our current recruitment, I doubt we'll have that particular advantage for the coming season.

I think unless Lapslie heads out, that would be a waste of a squad place. One or the other for me, we don't need both.

I think we are only one player short of the starting team. Granted an important one, we should be fully prepared

Maybe GA has agreed a loan or two incoming and waiting for parent clubs to release them to us?

GA did hint after signing Cartwright that no further sign of movement until after the Austria trip.

Loan players served Bolton really well, so maybe if this is the case, the wait will be worthwhile.

Last summer we had to bring in players as soon as possible for the change in division, whereas most of the current squad all have the league 1 experience either with us or other clubs.

The loan market in my view is something we look at differently to other clubs. As mentioned Bolton, their loans were difference makers who were in or around the starting 11. However over the last few seasons it feels like our loanees have mainly been viewed as squad fillers at best.

I know the old "you get what you pay for" will always go around, and Boltons Kenny, Cozier, Apter etc loans will have been on a big old contract at their parent clubs. But to me it feels like the Diabtate, Benn, McIntyre, Wheatleys of the world will have been on smaller money or we wouldn't be paying full term on them anyway. I'm trying to remember the last loanee where it looked like they were coming into start? Mellon maybe? But he still had Kav and at the time Leigh to compete with. Before that, Shepherd and then maybe Tyreik when we loaned him back from Plymouth like 3 years back.
