In a team fighting relegation and still more than any of our players

On central midfield, what we've been told is:

    1. There was interest in Metcalfe in Jan and it came back again in the summer although only Milwall made an offer

    2. When Power's mate went back to Wigan it felt highly likely he'd be made an offer and want to go.

So, my working assumption is that given the club knew that they were targeting a really strong midfield player but either the club haven't allowed that person to leave yet or he went elsewhere. I can't believe the solution to Power and Metcalfe going is Connolly and Cartwright. That doesn't stack up to me.

Doncaster have had a bid accepted for a midfielder and hope to have the deal done by Monday. Lapslie didn't play last night and wasn't mentioned in the list of injured players so could it be him? GA said a couple of our Fringe players had interest from other clubs.

Can’t let him go until we get another one at least through the door
If the interest is in him

Let’s hope we do a deal with Doncaster with Lapslie and a stack of cash in return for Owen Bailey. Fantasy I know but we really do need a classy midfield signing to replace Metcalfe and Power. Listening to Sharpe on the podcast he just talks of Sarcevic playing holding midfield or Lapslie alongside a player who’s been a centre back for the last few years. This is just bodging and you can’t do this in such a vital position.

Agreed, but it was his best ever league season in terms of goals scored. At 29 and a half, I'm not convinced he's going to improve and better it or even equal it with us, but we can but hope.

Exactly, we definitely needed at least one more before this rumour surfaced and if there is anything in it, we would desperately need two more.

As others have said, central midfield is a big concern. Cartwright will likely need time to adapt before he becomes a regular starter (as Metcalfe had) and I just don't see the Connolly experiment working at all. Sarcevic playing deeper also concerns me, he does his best work in the box and in my opinion doesn't have the legs to play as one of the midfield two.

In a window where we've generally improved our options, it would be really disappointing if we failed to add a proven L1 level midfielder and something I suspect we would regret quite quickly.

He is an improvement and not a bad signing. But i think if you look at his career and just 13 goals last season - I woulsnt be expecting a 20+ striker.

No issue from me. He is a fringe player and just making up the numbers. We just need to use the funds/wages to add to what weve got and get some real quality to the middle now.

Having now listened to MCann's interview about it, I'm not sure it's Lapslie as he says it's been taking a while as there's been a lot of interest in the lad. I just can't see there being a host of clubs fighting for his signature.
I bet there has been a fair bit of interest in Abbott though so wouldn't be surprised if it's him.

Good steady experienced signing for York that is, as they return to the football league.

Would love to see York promoted again, provided we dont go down!

And he's never worked at the co-op.

it’s gone quiet I reckon they must have a loan signing in their sights which will probably happen on the return from Austria

Sarce might be moving deeper back to his career slot before playing here. Jackson will be fighting for a shirt.

If I'm honest with Jackson, I didn't see enough from his spell last season with us to make me think he should be starting here. Seemed to pick up injuries a fair bit and even when he played he never looked overly threatening. New team, new system after being a bench player at Derby, hopefully with a pre-season under his belt and sone familiarity we might start seeing the best of him.

The injury was rare and unexpected and typical City bad luck. The one thing that all the Derby fans said about Jackson was that he never gets injured!

It’s obvious - wing backs are so important in this team and don’t create enough problem 1. Midfielder is static and was last year even more so this year with a defender sitting in there and no obvious quality partner (all other botch jobs or not got the quality) and last problem our forwards are either injury prone Sarc and Bobby or simply not clinical enough Jackson. Lots of work to be done in the attacking department as goals are clearly an issue for us.
