Theres a very decent striker in Wheatey just needed a goal for confidence and somebody within 20yds of him, helping out.

 

When Lapslie came here I thought tidy player who seemed to have the knack of getting on the end if things but not a GA type player. But I thought he changed the managers opinion with his play over the final two months of last season and probably forced his way into the planning of this one

 

Sorry but one thing he doesn’t do is go missing. Don’t get me wrong I agree that his end product was inconsistent especially further into the season, but the lad always looked for the ball and tried something.

 

Tbf I agree, most our signings in isolation would probably have been decent and I include Wheatley in that who I think has the most potential out of anyone we brought in in January but probably got slagged off the most. Again I think Ashby showed some promise, but I don’t really remember anyone having a good thing to say about him until Wycombe. Similar with Powell though, everyone wanted him gone until he scored at Barnsley. We will have to see with Ashby, but if we’d signed a player who hardly featured for another club in our league on loan and were bringing him as first choice, I’m not sure many would be welcoming him with open arms. But suppose that’s football fans in general, we’re all fickle. Neufville was worth 7 figure to some pre-Christmas, then terrible apparently over night.

 

I really do think Ashby will come good, especially if he has better players around him. He had that CH / PL knack of being able to play in tight spaces surrounded by opposition players. Funny isn't it though how things work out. As you alluded to, early last season according to some both Neufville and Bobby would be Championship bound in January....yet come end of the season nothing even rumoured about them, but Metcalfe has the CH contract and the "undisclosed fee".

Heard a whisper that Will Vaulks from Oxford is on our radar for CDM and captain role

 

Can't see Oxford letting any of their players go now they've got an emergo in place.

Or even an embargo. Damn phone.

 

I'd be amazed if Oxford allow anyone to go in their situation. All i remember from Vaulks is that he has a massive long throw on him, cant say anything else stood out. I suppose thats what you want in a DM?

 

Can also play right back. However, as @Petrov alludes to, if still under contract cannot see Oxford letting him go due to the fact they cannot sign anyone until at least January.

 

We need more of a box to box midfielder. The ones we have already are defensive.

 

According to capology his contract has ended so it may be out of Oxford's hands.

 

I wonder if a combination of Phillips/Lapslie/Sarce are being earmarked for the more attacking role in the midfield two?

 

Looks like he's still contracted to them. He wasn't part of their retained list released or mention of them in talks or anything, he's just treated like anyone else under contract. He was pictured training with their squad yesterday.

Also, i'm amazed Capology is still going after all these years. Honkingly bad site for info.

 

I am interested, perhaps a bit worried knowing GA's form for unusual selections, to see where Phillips plays.

He and Humphrys get on quite well apparently so I'm wondering if they'll play well together.

I honestly think we'd be overrun constantly with that approach. It was tough for Power and Metcalfe at times, leading to the wish from some for us to put 3 in midfield at times. As part of a 3, then yes, I can see that.

 

I wonder if the lack of a left back/left centre half to replace Kelly/Tilt (Gillesphey covers one of those) is because 4-3-3 could be on the cards?

It would be good to have a plan B. We were found out a little by teams in the second half of last season

That way a midfield 3 of, say, Connolly, Cartwright & Phillips could work?
