Minimum 4 . It’s probably one of the most “ booked” position in any squad.

 

I think we will see another CB, two more CM’s and a RWB.

I can’t see us signing any more attackers unless someone leaves.

 

Which sounds absolutely perfect until you admit that neither of them actually played so if they only improved on those two, just how far has the squad improved?

I actually think they're both good signings but pretending they're coming in to replace two people that didn't contribute is naively ingenious in my opinion.

 

He definitely wasn't about in 1966 m9.

 

I suppose you could make an argument that Mullin was the Cook replacement and thus, Beasley was the Mullin replacement which is fair enough

as for Connolly, no idea whether GA is being serious when it comes to deploying him in the midfield, but as far as him being a defender, he operates in the centre or the right of a back 3. Byrne did play sporadically in the first half of the season, due to injuries of course, and was never replaced. So it adds competition and cover on that side

In turn that means we still need to replace Kelly. Touray can cover at LWB and LB but we cant rely on him to cover both so another body needs to be brought in to cover that side

 

I think GA is absolutely going to use Connolly as a holding midfielder so we will have to rely on his superior knowledge

 

Doesn’t strike me with much confidence to be honest. Connolly may end up being an amazing midfielder but there’s one thing we cant run away from and that’s his injury record. We need 2 quality CMs, and a backup CM as priority. The only other holes in the team is the lack of competition at wing back, another CB and a striker

This "can play" language needs banning in my view.

Play players in their natural and favourite positions.

 

According to the T&A article this morning, midfield is Connolly's best position and where he prefers to play.

Could do with a bit of youth in there i'd say? Doesn't look like we have many under the age of 26/27 ish.

 

Although there is a few there who can play different positions. I would like to think we have 5 more players lined up.

2 midfielders maybe 3 despite what Alexander says about Connelly

Confirmed now by GA that Connolly has been brought in to play as holding midfielder.

It would appear Dave Challinor played him out of position at CB!

Connolly enjoyed his spell in the Championship with Blackpool playing in midfield according to GA.

Still think we need 2 more CM's.

 

Guarantee there will be posts on here by October/November time along the lines of "Connolly is not a DM, get him into the defence". It's a little like the Humps one, but playing central striker or left wing, it's an attacking role and even when he played up top he always drifted to the left channel anyways. However, i dont really ever like the idea of square pegs through the spine of the side.

I cant imagine every manager he's had since he left Ipswich barring 20-odd games for Blackpool in that 9 year spell were off about him being a defender rather than a DM. Something very cautious in the back of my mind about this deal. Need extra bodies in there just incase.
