Think we have to be careful what we wish for here with regards power. He’s been a great leader in a team that’s finished 4th in league 1 during first season back. He sets the tone & is always the first one to front up after defeat. There’s been many players over the season who have come out and said about him been great round the training pitch, yeah he tailed off abit later in the season but think a lot that was due to the yellow cards and he couldn’t risk flying into a tackle like he did at start of season. Leaders are much harder to replace.

He wouldn’t be leaving if Alexander didn’t want him to so we will have to watch this space.
I agree on his leadership qualities though and they are very tough to replace. I would be keeping him personally as next season is about kicking on and making sure we go forward and not backwards. Losing such an influential and experienced pro would be detrimental imo.

To be fair, we need upgrades in midfield especially around mobility. We had no real cover last year (especially after Pattison left). I am sure we can upgrade on Power (if needed) plus 1. Interesting times

Player always holds all the cards, if Power is interested he will go ....

If a while, thats nice considering the end of season run in and the play offs knowing he had 1 foot in Wigan!

So if they are just paying up his contract, does that fee come to us or get paid off to Power? If Wigan want him and he wants the move then we should be demanding a fee and he leaves with nothing?

It's an interesting debate about leaders as those who shout are the first to be called leaders but there will be others who are much more quiet who are just as much a leader.
Going back to the 2013 squad Jones was the vocal leader yet Darby and McArdle were leaders also whilst being much more quiet but lead by example and I'm sure they were big leaders at the training ground.
I would imagine players like Tilt, Sarcevic and Touray are players like that who set standards in training.

If Power has gone to Alexander and said he wants the move then that will probably make up Alexander's mind as he won't want a player who is wanting to leave like how he allowed Halliday and Leigh to leave once they said they wanted to go.

Upgrade is a stretch. This is a player with over 500 games under his belt. Captained Sunderland, has 3 League one promotions to his name and an EFL Trophy winner.

Sam Drake (SHD) makes a good case for signing Smith.
I can see us having Wintle or Bailey lined up to replace Power if he leaves.

Albeit some years younger than 32 years old. He aint getting any better now. His experienced and influence will be hard to match but his impact on games/our starting 11....maybe we can do better.

Is Bailey not more of an attacking midfielder ? Always seem to remember playing further forward when he’s played against us

Or 22 wins and 4th place in our first season back unless we can get a leader of team who will be taking us to the top 3 places then that's a upgrade.

A captain leading by example with no goals over the season! Definitely replaceable for me

Gutted and shocked by this tbh. Feels a big a deal as when we sold windass and Johnson in 06. Some will say that’s an overreaction but part of our success last year which had as no where near a dog fight was characters like him. We ain’t getting better on our budget mark my words. Wrong move simple as.

Again, a captain leading by example of 22 wins and fourth place in our first season back, leadership in the dressing room and on the pitch will be hard to find.I keep hearing the upgrade remark, well for me if he does go, the upgrade will be only be a upgrade if we have a better season than our last season.

With more goals (than nil) from our midfield captain then we would have had a better season. Then we could well be in the championship. Tells me all we need to know. Don't get me wrong I will be disappointed if he goes but defo not irreplaceable

He’s never been a goal scoring midfielder. To suggest him not scoring is the reason we didn’t go up is barmy.

Never said it was a reason we didn't go up. I said we would have had a better season and COULD be playing Championship football. Goalscoring midfielder or not, a return of no goals is poor, especially with some of the chances he has had. Also seen some woeful set pieces, albeit better than Smallwood. As I said will be disappointed if it happend but hardly the end of the world

10 other players in the team and 20 others in the squad. Power didnt get us 4th place alone.

A lot of voices are saying the same thing in relation to Stockport and maybe why Challinor is leaving. The heavy rumour is that everyone linked to the club knows that they are slashing the budget next season. And the ownership want to buy younger and have someone who can train talent upwards to sell on, where as Challinor wants more 26/27+ year olds and ready talent to challenge year on year.

The clubs stuck by the strategy of buying for your level, but after a few failed L1 attempts and millions spent, they want a plan to make cash at the same time. However, Challinor apparently doesnt think that they can attract youth whilst also challenging for promotion. A kind of Peterborough up north plan.
