Alan Nixons weekly football rumours state that we are trying to sign Beesley again from Burton Albion.

Makes sense. A realistic target, we aren’t getting Lowe’s of this world with our wage structure.

Underwhelming if true though. He's 29 with one outstanding 6 months in his career so far. The sort of signing that will probably do okay for us but not likely to push us on to the next level.

Looking at some of the names being mentioned on here and other platforms, I think some people need to temper their expectations.

Last summer we essentially had a blank canvas to work with. We brought in an entirely new back five, a new midfield pairing and a couple of strikers. We won’t have anywhere near that level of room for manoeuvre this time around.

I’m expecting a transfer window similar to January where we make a few uninspiring signings, perhaps players who’ve shown flashes of promise elsewhere ( like Joe White at MK Dons) and hope that one or two of them come good

Beesley be good signing for me, always looked a handful against us and Is realistic unlike Lowe etc, we still need to remember where we are in this league

If there’s cash to be paid we ain’t paying it. We have an allergic reaction as a club and some fans of spending money and actually investing. Dread to think of the wages wasted in January and how with some planning that could have gone towards a better player or a fee. We don’t think like that at city even with Sharpe who I rate we still don’t think like that. It’s Julian Rhodes shadow scrimping and saving never speculating to accumulate.

Rahic speculated to accumulate and lost the club £2.5 million. Richmond speculated to accumulate and bankrupt the club. Whatever we did last summer worked and let’s hope we are as successful again although you’ve spent most of the season moaning.

There examples of going wrong but that was individuals with poor controls around them. We now have DOF chief scout id expect due diligence if we were investing which wouldn’t have been the case previously. Club live hand to mouth frugal and some fans like that as they scared we will go to the wall when the reality is we wouldn’t by investing. But am not arguing that am arguing what little we have use it better. I have said hats off to all this season they did great until Xmas when the DOF, scout and owner let the players down with the crap that was brought in. They deserved better for their efforts and it’s a credit to them they pulled it round again in feb/march.

I expect us to have similar budget to this season, around the mid of the table compared to other clubs. How we use it is another matter but as you allude to some of the names mentioned are simply out of our reach when there are big spenders in the division equally looking for that sort of talent.

That analogy doesn't really work if you want success. You've picked two examples, one of which actually got us to the premiership, two years at the top level in the last hundred years if I recall. Even last season Rupp pushed the boat out a more than he's done before. Just because Town failed last season after spending millions the general correlation shows the clubs that spend generally are more successful.

Our old wage structure has to go if that's the case, Lowe isn't a Championship level player, and he's not one of the best forwards in L1 either, so we're in danger of going backwards fast if w3 can't even afford him.

TBF you said all this last summer. How we would struggle to attract players and how we would struggle to compete.

You dont have to spend lots of money - you just got to spend what you have correctly. Last summer was a very good window, January not so much. Bradford, Lincoln, Stevenage.....

We are simply not going to keep out performing our budget every season. Better quality is coming down and up, other teams will take punts and risks. We are just expected to out performer our budget. Any other club would have used this season as an opportunity to sell the club and it’s potential look at what investment could be made to kick us on. I guarantee that won’t be the case it will be free transfers from teams in the lower end of this division, with maybe a PL youngster thrown in for good measure.

With the new salary cap and rules around it
We don’t know what clubs will do
They might cut their cloth accordingly
I doubt it though, so what we need is the EFL to enforce it better
And of all the January signings the only one to show up, was the one we paid money for
kayden Jackson, so we did spend and he is probably on a good whack too

That’s fine but we lost £3 million to get promoted and I don’t think you can expect Rupp to keep funding huge losses,he won’t have that sort of money and much as I’d like a crazy billionaire to throw money around it’s not likely to happen.

    Yes, mostly.

But in order to protect our interests it's important we pay players like Bobby very well so he has no reason to leave, and it's important we can compete for established top end L1 players without looking at them knowing we have to uncover a bargain version.

He’ll probably get a pay increase, Stoke aren’t the PL big boys paying their kids a fortune. But he had a solid second half of the season at a club owned by a billionaire who want him back. Huddersfield also rumoured who probably have double our budget. Still young as well, plus auction. We need to find the next GEM, not get into a bidding war with clubs with higher financial muscle than us.
