I use the train regularly when I go abroad on mainland Europe, generally the experience is levels above what I get in the UK for way way cheaper.

Oh yes , last time we used one were on Italo HS Trains . First Class Milan to Verona (100 m) was cheaper than a standard class commute from Stortford to London ( 30 miles! ) Stunningly quick !

The world's biggest wine festival is held in Verona each year Kevin. You weren't going there were you?

In September I'm using the train to travel from Geneva right though Switzerland, into Austria then back over to Munich and I've no doubt it'll be much simpler than trying to navigate a standard return journey over here!

Recently went from Krakow to Zakopane 1st class, about £15 each f I recall. That was four of us in our own compartment.

Did Krakow to Gdańsk a few year ago, so across the country, can’t remember the exact price but was about £50 unheard of here. Australia is dirt cheap, cost me £4 for a 50 minute train ride into Melbourne, then the trams were free. But apparently we’re serious on having a green environment in this country… bollocks.

I think this is drifting off topic but we have done quite a few European train trips. Our most recent was to Florence via Zurich, returning via Montreux. Also did trip to Frankfurt via Brussels, returning via Cologne. Our best trip was an epic journey to Lecce in Italy, 2 nights in Strasbourg, 2 nights in Rome, then to Bari to join a week's walking trip, then to Lecce for 3 nights, then Bologna for 1 night (long train journey), then to Paris for 2 nights via Turin and Milan! Costs minimal, the journey from Bari to Lecce, an hour and a bit, €6 1st class!
A word of warning, German trains have become very unreliable due to lack of investment. Lots of cancellations, they used to be very good.

Bologna; a massive railway station on 3 levels. You can get there 20 minutes early and still miss your train.

True story; I missed being blown to smithereens in the 1980 Bologna Station bombing by the skin of my teeth. I’d travelled overnight by train from Paris with my friends in a drama group from Essex. We were knackered, hungry and thirsty and all wanted to go to the cafe bar. Our group leader said we needed to meet the Italian officials waiting for us outside, so we did so and left in a minibus. Ten minutes later the bomb went off in the waiting room next to the cafe bar. We would undoubtedly all have been killed had we gone for refreshments as we wanted.
One face on the rebuilt station clock is left permanently set at 10.25, the time the bomb detonated.

We’re thinking of going to Lecce by train, via Paris, Milan and Rome, in June. Not sure yet about which way we’d come back. As an obviously seasoned train adventurer, any suggestions, and other tips about booking/doing this trip gratefully received, by pm if necessary.
