We were just a shit team that had nothing about us. We stayed up against the odds because of the character of the ‘dad’s army’ squad. Players like Saunders and Redfearn came in and bought into what Jewell was doing with McCall, Lawrence, Beagrie, Blake and Mills.

i can sort of understand why the new manager wanted to try upgrade some of the squad but we lost our character and without Jewell leading us we were just hopeless.

Ward ran around a lot chasing lost causes. He gave away a lot of fouls I remember. His finishing wasn’t great, nope. But there were rumours about Mills and Jewell having a bust up at the time and we needed to replace him.

it was a bad move but every transfer of that era was a flop - Petrescu, Hopkin, Nolan, Atherton, even Carbone wasn’t a 40k a week player really in terms of what we got back, for all he was technically brilliant.

 

Put money on the majority of them signings where not down to Hutchins

Such a shame that he allowed his ego to fook us over after all that hard work ............you could spot his signings a mile off and thats inclufing the years before that.............

 

I have fond memories of 'Daisy' McNiven and Staniforth. They seemed pretty good to me at the time but the stats may not back me up.
