On the other hand, this short term planning means that come summer, we are not in a position of having players we don't really want under contract. I am sure that our team are already looking at two lists of who we may wish to sign then.

If i move into a bigger house and faced with bigger bills, that's not investing, that's paying the going rate for where i currently am.

If i go shopping at christmas and are faced with inflated prices due to seasonal variations i have to pay those inflated prices. Thats not investing either.

borrowing 6 players, which is essentially what we have done as id argue no more than 2 will be here long term, partially funded by moving on 8 players is hardly breaking the bank now for future benefit.

Perhaps it was sloppy wording or misconstrued text but investment it aint

For this example, you have half a dozen Chansari
it could all turn very messy, very quickly, if they get bored and want out
Premiership and championship football is an extremely expensive business.

You do also have the right not to buy the bigger house or pay the inflated prices
You would hopefully study the pro's and con's and not risk re- posesion or county court judgements
You might take a calculated gamble
Unfortunately, non of us know where the club are financially and so we have to trust their judgement
It would be great for the club to have pots of real money, we havn't
Where we sit today without breaking the bank, is light years away from last January
I do agree though , Sparks words could have been better chosen.

We have to remember where we are and where we were. Go back a couple of years and and ask yourself if you'd like to be fifth in league one with 20,000 crowds at VP, you'd have been laughed at for even mentioning it. It's a great base to build on. That said we are light years away from being remotely competitive, that doesn't stop us wanting to be promoted, that's utter lunacy but does mean we have to expect the outcome that we probably come back down and fans don't tend to react well to losing games. The vast majority of clubs in the championship are well established, our history denotes its rare we venture out of the bottom two divisions. Doesn't mean you don't go into the divisions with the best intentions but if we do by some miracle get back up, there has to be a sense of realism.
I think this thread shows there are plenty of fans with that realism, that football in the 2020s generally hemorrhages money and that if you don't want to be one of those type of clubs, then there is a ceiling as to where you can end up.
As Bronco said to me yesterday, don't get to hung up on it, enjoy the ride while it lasts because success in football doesn't last forever.

Hence why Ryan's language is incorrect or lazy.

And the other challenge is every year it will become more difficult.

A few years ago, when we were last in the higher places in league one, we'd look at the premier league and say "look at those Championship club trying to buy their way into the PL, that will all go to pot soon..."

What has actually happened is now we have league one clubs doing the same to try and get back into the Championship. They behaviour has dropped down a league.

And, it can be argued that it's dripping even further down e.g. MK Dons, York in the Conference are examples of clubs ploughing in money to get promotion.

So, we're an outlier at the moment. But we've got to where we've got to this season and there's a chance to push on. Whether we've done enough, time will tell but what we know is we'll continue to be an outliers because more clubs are adopting the strategy of say your Wolves, Norwich, Southamptons of a few years ago and it lower leagues. So, we can complain it's difficult/unfair this season, next season will be harder, and the one after. The general direction isnt changing.

The new 'kop' is also being part funded to the tune of £18 million by the Welsh Government. Part of a 'wider' investment into the Wrexham area:

Read today that Burnley are over a hundred million in debt and in trouble.

That's my view. After fumbling around the the best part of 8 years after losing to Millwall, the club has got its act together again. The commercial side feels more secure and it will be interesting to see what this US link actually brings.

We don't have the income from the McBurnie, Wisdom and others that we were receiving back then, which we squandered. But, we do have, arguably, the largest fan base in most of our lifetimes which points to improvement and optimism for the future.

Who'd have thought, at this time last year, that we would be genuine challengers for the L1 playoffs? As you say, it's not progress taking the long view but we are progressing.

Football fortunes can change very quickly. Look at Luton. While we have progressed this season there is nothing to say that it won’t go badly wrong again next. Rupp needs about £25-£30 million to keep us in the Championship if we were to go up and accept losses of around £15million of that. I have my doubts he could afford it.
I know the idea of promotion this season is exciting and would be a brilliant achievement I’d rather us get there in a position of being able to give it a good go at staying up.

When do you think we will be in that better position though? Like others have said, it isn't going to get any easier or less expensive if we wait.

It's a funny one is this. The Welsh Govt are 'helping' to fund the new Kop to the tune of £18 mill as part of the new so-called Gateway project. The new Kop has supposedly a 5,500 capacity. That was part of the planning permission for the construction. But the construction company building the Kop (McLarens?) are on the record of saying the design of the Kop has a higher capacity of 7,500!

I think a lot of the old uns on here knew how badly it turned out in the early 2000s and how still to this day we are paying for it :(
Listen i went on about investment but i wasnt wanting us to go bust over it just simply show a little ambition ...................i mean should we get there it doesnt automaticaly mean we have to throw millions of pounds at it does it ?????
If we go up have a season there then i aint gonna knock it if we drop down straightway least we looked to had a go without busting the club.

Btw fook can go on about being ready in 3 years time but in order to be ready for the step up we would still have t invest millions to stay there which aint gonna hsppen is it ????

There isn't such a thing unless a new mythical owner comes in. You can't predict what will happen next season, we might be bottom half of the table this time next year.

I'd like to see how often we look into the lower leagues and see if we can spot young talent? Feels like forever since we plucked someone up for NL in the hope we get a gem to flog on. Never even feels like we get linked to a player, like if there's a lad doing well at a Halifax or even lower, you very rarely see a City link to them.

I’m sure that’s why he’s open to selling , thankfully he’s said it in the spirit of “ I’m only going to sell it to someone who will cater for the clubs legacy?

    Not read that one.

I just find it 'interesting' that a football club that has been privately funded with multi millions of pounds, and recently had an investor buy 'minority' shares to the value of £47m, can obtain Government funding to the tune of £18m. Just doesn't sit right with me...

So you have a recoverable asset , like me, house and land which “guarantees” any loan by a lender.
The club doesn’t have any assets . Thats a huge difference which I’m sure you clearly know.
