My short answer is simply No!

The only way forward imo us to put some kind of limit on playing budgets and enforce it through the new regulator. I don't underestimate the difficulties attached to doing that but something fundamental has to change.

Only if you develop an elite means of recruiting, developing and selling young talent, on a very consistent basis.

I reckon we're getting to a point where it can be done. Because at some point something has to give and owners stop funding and we see more Sheff Wednesdays. That will lead to a balance out of parity.

That would give any clubs who aren't massively bankrolled a huge advantage, especially if that club has big crowds and is a good prospect for sponsorship.

But that's ifs and buts, it may never happen. There's some folk with money to literally burn.

I agree . The main issue there is it would have to be a FIFA regulatory body. If it was EFL only, there could be a talent drain to Europe or beyond, paying better wages.

FIFA show little interest in this. They have their FFP rules which they enforce quite rigorously albeit focused on participants in the Champions League. They leave domestic issues to the domestic regulators.

It will be down to the new football regulator to sort this out. That will need the agreement of, in order, the PL, the EFL and the FA. And it will tske time. The PL has already made their views clear to the new regulator ...keep your mitts off how we distribute OUR TV broadcasting revenues including how we help former members of the PL through the Parachute system! And that's where the problem starts imo.

Yeah, I imagine if there's an injury or he gets a run of games, we'll enact that clause to extend, if not and he's back up as we probably all expect, he'll probably depart in May.

It seems that most Championship clubs are bankrolled but to ask someone who has a background in finance, how exactly does it work? Call me naive but I can't see the attraction for very wealthy businessmen or women to throw tens of millions of pounds down the drain every year. I know a couple have such as Morris at Derby and the guy at Sunderland but rich people tend not to throw their money away.

I dont know the ins and outs around football finances in the slightest, but I'm fascinated to see what Wrexham will be like in the PL, it's a matter of time. But when they are there, what's their spending power like compared to the rest? Small ground, currently undergoing changes in the training base I think, but who will they attract and what's their spending limit is going to be fun to watch. They sold 1 share the other week for £47m I think I read? Wonder what their shares will be worth in the PL.....

Those with their snouts in the trough aren't voting for the trough to be opened up for all and sundry.

Definitely veering into politics here though!

I think for some it is just a plaything and a status symbol.
For others there is another means of making money like at Town where the chairman is buying up a lot of land around the ground for hotels and other development.
For some I think it is useful as a means of avoiding tax as a loss against which to offset profits.
On the offchance of making it to the promised land of the Premier League and its riches and potentially turning that into a closed shop with no relegation.
Or a combination of any of those.
It is a risk and a gamble, but people who have amassed wealth are often risk takers, often with other people's money, e.g Glasers, Richmond!

I remember reading an interview with Trevor Hemmings son (PNE). Money is no object to them as he was a billionaire. They budgeted to lose 10m a year at Preston just to keep the club afloat in respect of his fathers wishes.
I expect the Coates Family just pick up the loose change down the back of their sofa for any Stoke City losses.

It's a puzzle to me why they'd do it! To generalise, they have serious amounts of dosh, have big egoes and are chssing the PL dream .. to increase their egoes further. In fairness, a small number are genuine fans of their clubs but most hsve little connection with them. They all choose to pump their own cash into the clubs as loans - often interest free - or equity. And it's easily done for most because they have lots of it. Those that don't have lots of spare cash to donate to their footie club, have to get out or avoid getting into it in the first place. Many clubs would go under without their owners cash.

What footie needs is for its own good is for one of the heavily indebted clubs to go bust! It's a harsh thing to say but at some point it will happen. The Championship is the 7th most wealthy league in Europe in terms of broadcasting revenues and they still all make huge losses. And as it filtered down to the Championship from the PL, so it's started now to filter down from the Championship to Lge1. It should be of concern to all genuine footie fans.

There is no way you could run a club even remotely close to being sustainable in the championship, only if you had a budget that was way less than the next lowest club by some distance.

    Yeah, agree, absolutely no way.

You'd have to have a pretty perfect season to stay up once, then it would get harder the next season as every player that performs will be able to get paid much better elsewhere by default.

But we knew this when Rupp took over, that's what's puzzling. The Championship landscape wasn't totally dissimilar, the clubs were overspending massively, and recording tens of millions of losses in some cases.

It's not new, so I'd like to know what Stefan thinks about it now, and if his stance has changed on funding us as a Championship club: why?

I'll give credit to the Coates', the Hemmings and to Landsdown at Bristol; they are all long time fans of their clubs ... and incredibly wealthy. I personally don't like what they're doing but it's their money and they're operating within the EFL rules. It's others with no local connection to their club who I really take exception to.

The club need to have serious thought about how they are able to bridge this gap. Seen people suggest that our break even budget is bottom 6. Rupps investment making it mid table. Surely that can’t go on and will eventually take us back wards.

What more needs to be done:
    Ticket increases
More squad assets (initial outlay costs)
    Scrapping youth team
    Investing in youth
I don’t know how but more commercial opportunities

Not sure but some serious questions need answering on long term plans as it’s clear he funding us to get there and unlikely to fund once they’re. Apparently we are unique in that this club is expensive to run, well maybe it’s time Rupp looks for help.

I don’t profess to have any financial knowledge at all so am speaking just as a fan.

Why have no clubs actually gone tits up at this level yet?
Is it solely down to mega rich owners just covering all losses?

Sheffield Wednesday are the obvious club to be front and centre at the moment but they will be bought by somebody eventually and will continue to function as Sheffield Wednesday.

    Whats the tipping point?

Also we are now in Feb and in a great position to at least get in the playoffs.

You are then just 3 games away from the Championship.
It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that come May we are in that position.
Do you think Rupp would prefer us to stay where we are as he is in no way rich enough to fund a proper go at staying in the Championship?

I know you can’t answer the last bit but it’s not an impossible scenario to imagine.

We need to keep punching above our weight and continue keeping the club in the spotlight. We need investment in scouting to pick up more players like Metcalfe. And we need to continue expanding our commercial enterprises. The better we do the better chance we will have of attracting top finance

Rupp is in an impossible position. On the one hand, I'm sure he'd like to see 'his' club get promoted. Not because he's a lifelong fan but because he could then sell it and make a return on it. On the other hand, would anybody buy the club before it was promoted? I doubt it if Rupp wants to make a return. And that's his dilemma. If we are promoted and he then can't find a buyer, he will have to underwrite the losses until he can find one. It's a difficult decision for him snd potentially a very costly one. As fans, we'd probably say just go for it, Stefan. But we're not the ones picking up.the tab when he's struggling to find a buyer.

I am probably been incredibly naive here, but I assume we will have increased income from TV and commercial etc, and the only increased costs will be salaries. So if additional income is say £10m (just a figure) in the first year, then we have an extra £10m to spend on contracts. So that's our extra budget, spread across the full length of the contracts so we don't struggle if we go straight back down. We cut our cloth accordingly and if we go down we go down. Simples.

    What am I missing ?
