Alexander, after one of the recent defeats, alluded to the fact we can't compete financially with some of the other clubs, he seemed quite frustrated by it which isn't surprising. As a business we have a structure and we have to run by that unless a golden chicken starts laying golden eggs.

    Exactly.

Competing at the top of L1 isn't cheap and we've had too many players over the years on contracts that haven't been value. A purchase of a £500k player with add-ons and wages will be a commitment in the region of £2m, that's around 2,000 season tickets a year for 3 years, on one player.

Hopefully this tie-up with the US might provide more leverage for us. I can't blame SR for not pumping millions into the club on the off-chance and then over-committing us.

It’s obvious that it would be difficult to compete in the championship and with money filtering down it’s getting a lot harder in league one. So we have to be clever in the transfer market and Sharpe is doing a good job so far. To even finish in the play offs would be a massive achievement

I agree with the points you're making about Rupp not wanting to over-commit in return for a shot at the Championship. He hasn't got deep enough pockets to do that. Potentially more importantly, we're all still waiting to hear more about the mysterious 'investor' from across the pond and who knows how that might affect things in the future.

Not sure it's an investment per se, more a back-of-shirt sponsor on a three-year deal, set to commence next season.

You may well be correct. But did that warrant the fanfare linked to the club's CEO climbing aboard a plane on its way to Seattle? Not in my book.

Probably not, maybe it's more lucrative than a simple sponsorship but sponsorship is what's reported so we can only go by what we know.

I was hoping it was something bigger and better than say a new shirt sponsor. In the US of A, there has been a step change in the naming rights of NFL stadia. There are now many more corporate sponsors providing long term investment for construction or purchase of new stadia etc. It must have been wishful thinking on my part hoping that we had tapped into that market somehow!

Hopefully the shirt sponsor announcement was just a bit of a red herring and there may be more to it that the club will talk about soon... not gonna hold my breath though.

That sounds like standard operating procedure for transfer business. The whole window seems to have been approached on a random and chaotic basis, even allowing for the inevitable movement on targets.

I think one of those eggs will lay in the summer in the form of Metcalfe. That’s when we have to start playing the transfer market smart and bringing in more investments alongside experience.

According to Kieran Maguire an expert in Football finance , current average across the board loses at Champiosnhip clubs is an astonising £570k PER WEEK.
I appreciate there will be anomalies club to club but that is breathtaking sum to underwrite

Have a look at the table in post #3074 in this thread for the detail of what Kieran is referring to. It's eye watering! At the sake of repeating myself, I doubt that Rupp has deep enough pockets to sustain that level of losses for very long if at all.

Looking at the attendances then, some big clubs getting 3 to 4 thousand fans and if you listen to some L33ds fans, you would think this team never went below 20 thousand.

Yeah I agree. It's not really on the same scale as the time we announced that the club shop was getting a new roof.

It's incredible,I never for a minute thought attendances were so low at that time.

And we don’t have tangible assets to support commercial loans either .

It's verging on a separate topic really, but do you think there is a way to run a championship club and thrive at the level, whilst trying to be sustainable? I'm thinking we are more and more going toward a system where you just have to be able to accept that you are going to write off millions and millions to have a club even survive at that level. That's what it feels like we are getting nearer to anyways.
