Ambition is a great thing to have. But it may have to be tempered if there is an inability to finance that ambition into the future. At the moment, the level of funding provided to Championship clubs by their owners to achieve their ambitions is many millions every year. I simply don't believe that our current owner has the money needed to achieve the fans' ambitions of becoming an establushed club in the Championship. He has previously said thst he has the finance to get us into the Championship. He has said nothing about continuing to provide funding once we've achieved that.

Look at it like this, say you won 100 million on the lottery

Would you buy city for 10 mil and lose another 10 mil per year minimum to fund your championship dream

I think the wife might have something to say about it

And that's if your a fan, a lot of owners are not

If (BIG if) we were to get promoted this season, it seems to me that there are three likely scenarios:
    1. We get bought out by a mega rich owner(s) who is prepared to plough gazzillions into the club, allowing us to (hopefully) consolidate in the Championship.
    2. We borrow vast amounts of money and put the club in massive debt in order to (hopefully) consolidate in the Championship.
    3. We raise ST prices and use other increased revenues to improve the squad as far as possible without borrowing. We recognise that this will be nowhere near sufficient funding to build a competitive Championship squad and will likely mean that we are regularly beaten and immediately relegated.

I don’t mean to suggest that we shouldn’t try to get promoted, but I’d be interested to know which of those options most people would prefer or think likely. Or, indeed, if there is another plausible scenario that I haven’t thought of.

Option 1 would be preferable, Option 3 is the more likely.. Option 2 is a NO NO.

Option 3 doesn't necessarily mean relegation.

So are we saying that without a billionaire owner , we have reached our ceiling
If that is the case football is finished and we might as well pack in now

Which is why I said “will likely” mean immediate relegation, rather than definitely.
I guess we could try to construct a ‘dad’s army’ squad of experienced Champ and ex-PL players on the way down, or a team of youngsters, on a lower wage bill than other Champ clubs, in the hope that that might keep us up. But the chances are that it wouldn’t. It seems to me that only a mega rich owner, or massive debt, will keep anyone in the Championship for long these days, given the figures Dennis quoted in the Transfer Rumours thread:

Sadly, it does now appear that only mega rich owners or massive debt will keep a club in the Championships or PL. And, even then, it’s not guaranteed.

You'd offer Baldwin an extension in the Championship? :joy::joy::joy:

    I honestly have no words.

I am of the opinion that we should absolutely go for it this season and if we we do go up we have to cut our cloth accordingly and it that means we come back down, then so be it.
But...I am coming round to the thinking that what you are saying here might actual be closer to the truth than you think. The ridiculous player wages permeating down from the PL and Championship look to be becoming "normal" in the lower leagues, an effect probably stoked but the antics of Wrexham etc. Maybe we really can't afford the types of players we all want.

I think we have to admit it's impossible to be self sufficient as a club playing in the championship, the exponential rise in wages simply eats money like it's going out of fashion. Your existing players will have a salary increase written into their contracts and any player being targeted will want a salary that is of keeping of a player in the championship. Increased sponsorship and season ticket price hikes only goes so far.
I don't see the club putting itself in potential financial harm, possibly seeking external investment to make up the shortfall.
Choice 3 is the only option on the table right now, not necessarily a bad one but a choice that has seen Alexander already allude to this week that it makes it hard to compete even in league one. As it stands we aren't even one of the big spenders in league one, never mind competing in the championship.

Many clubs have followed Option 1 and become established in the Championship ... and their wealthy owners continue to plough their own money into the club.

Some have supplemented Option 1 with various forms of Option 2. It can work particularly where owners provide loans to the club and don't charge interest. But in that particular case, it's little different to Option 1. Arranging commercial loans for clubs which are for all intents and purposes insolvent if it weren't for the owners underpinning them, would be very difficult.

Option 3 has been used by a very small number of clubs in the recent past. I'd include Rotherham, Blackpool and Burton in that group but they didn't hang around long.

The ideal future for us would be to be somehow promoted this season with some quality added to the squad to do so. At which point Rupp can sell the club to somebody with a lot more money than him who is willing to continue spending it on us for perverse reasons. It's a long-shot but Option 1 is probably worth hoping or dreaming for!
