Prefer to get there and fail than not get there at all. I know it would be difficult but it’s the same for many promoted clubs. I t would probably demand good use of the loan market

    "Stagnated in the championship" :joy::joy:

I'm not sure what you expect of Preston but I'm pretty sure their fans are reasonably happy at competing in the 2nd tier for so long!

You were the one that mentioned the budgets and are throwing figures around to "prove" we can't compete. Either take a sh1t or get off the pot, so to speak.

I can see both sides and the angles they are coming from, I agree that in monetary terms it's levels above what we currently budget on. But as you allude to what is definitive answer to 'when we are ready'? No guarantees whatsoever that Alexander will do what Parky did and finish higher every season, the closeness of this division you could easily be fighting relegation next season if luck doesn't go your way. Let's knock this talk on the head though of not wanting to go up simply because we'd come back down. Our first step on the championship ladder would effectively see us a yo-yo club, similar to Burnley in the championship, would their fans rather just sit in mid table mediocrity in the championship rather than the slight change of staying up?

Yes, I wish we could stagnate in the Championship for a few years

Alexander obviously thought we could get through with the personnel we have at the club until we bring another striker in or the one rumoured to be at the club is match fit,
Even accepting your comment about his game time since his return IMO he would have given the Town defenders more problems than the two who were on the pitch, I don't believe we will be bringing a double figure goal scorer in this window, we are already paying the majority of Cooks salary would it have been a big deal to have kept him at the club getting fitter by the week or was this situation too good for Alexander to refuse, no Cook at the club so fans can't question our striker options, we are where we are and as fans we have to accept Alexander stands or falls by his decisions, but that does not mean we can't question some of his calls.

I just want some pace. If we get a CB to replace the seemingly on his way out Byrne, get someone different. Our CBs move like ships.

Need some legs in midfield, said it on another post but in my view you cant play Power and Metcalfe because they are too defensive and wont push forward. Same with the AMs, need a proper outlet who can stretch a defence. Striker is a no brainer that we need some physicality and pace. We just are in desperate need for quickness across the board.

We need a striker but more than that we need to be creating chances and we aren’t anymore

I'd normally agree but Alexander has us in a great position to compete for at least a play off place do we turn that opportunity down to wait until the summer and bring someone in, we've been there before and missed out because we didn't strengthen and relied on the players we had ?.

No one is asking the club to blow millions on players
Most have a fairly good grasp on where the club is financially and don’t want a return to the bad old days of hand to mouth or unaffordable borrowing, but so far this window has been very underwhelming. The window still has a bit to go and this is as big a week as we have had in a long time, from a non game perspective.
Get things wrong and performance and result continue on the current trend , the fans forum in early Feb could be interesting.

Wages and who pays the most is apparently what most players are interested in
The days of loyalty are long gone
The greed at the top has filtered down and in my opinion is doing the game serious damage

It's players doing what 99% of the population does, takes a job offer that pays the most, you can't pay a mortgage with loyalty so they have every right to take the contract that is the most money. Likewise I'd says clubs and fans are not very loyal to managers/players as success if often very quickly forgotten and when they are out of favour there are often demands for them to go.

If you get promoted you assess the income and cut your cloth accordingly. We’d get fresh investment, be justified in increasing ticket prices, and be looking art even bigger crowds.

you could do a ‘Rotherham’ and try wing it, or you could invest and make a proper go of it.

however, all that discussion is getting ahead of the real issue, which is the lack of recent activity this month (bar the loans).

A lot of the squad will be out of contract in the summer and others would be moved on if we went up.

but let’s bloody strengthen now. We need to do so just to stand still. The lack of pace at the back continues to trouble us (poor decision from GA to move Touray on Sat), we look powderpuff up front and have no effective replacement for Sarcevic/Bobby.

Of course they will take what they can get,
I am a long way from being a socialist, but no one deserves salaries in the region of £100s of thousands per week
The numbers at the top filter down and make it harder for clubs lower down to stay on an even keel without large handouts from benefactors
Many who don’t care one jot about the club’s history

A difficult one for sure, although our creative play has gone off the boil when we have created the odd chance (which we did) even in the Cardiff game our forwards/strikers find it difficult to beat the keeper from a yard out.

Many years ago I was in the company of Rocket Ronnie Futcher and he was saying the general assumption from fans is when you get a chance on goal you hit the shot as hard as possible when sometimes the ball needs caressing/placing past the keeper, and that was exactly what that chance Humphry had needed, and that is IMO why we won't get the best from him as he's always looking for a worldly and I'm not singling Stephan out because we know when he does hit a ball its usually spectacular.

You've known me for a very long time Andy and anything to get our beloved team into a higher league I'd be 100% behind I do believe the position Alexander has us in at the moment deserves backing in the transfer market, but would 2 players with Championship or possibly Premier League experience be available for a combined outlay of £1m + ?.

Exactly.... I've changed jobs 7 times in my 35 year career. 6 of those for money and 1 (just the one) because of the "project". I dont blame the players as their career is much shorter. If we can't compete then either 1) sell to some who can or 2) be honest with the fans and accept gradual improvement and financial stability.
