Ward was more interested in his hair style than playing. 20 k a week laughable, just like all the other mercenaries we signed in the second season in the Premiership.

It was a shame about Lee Sharpe. He had clearly lost the raw pace that once made him an England winger. But I remember one away game that we won at Barnsley - Sharpe played in central midfield and completely controlled the game. I came away thinking we had discovered our own second tier Glenn Hoddle. But he never got played there again and it all disappeared into thin air.
Kudos to Ashley Ward for the financial sacrifice he made to keep the club afloat. But as a centre forward he was utterly useless for us. Spent most of his time concede fouls or falling over and failing to con referees into awarding us free kicks. And he couldn’t hit the proverbial cow’s arse with a banjo.

Ashley Ward was a direct replacement for Lee Mills. I thought Mills was twice the player Ward was.

Although in hindsight I think Mills departure was inevitable as I heard an interview with him a few years ago where he said at the latter stages of his time with us he was really struggling with a knee problem.

On a similar note, if I’m watching City till I’m 90 I don’t think I’ll ever see a front two as good as Mills and Blake.

Agreed. Mills and Blake were unbelievable together. Especially with Beags providing the service. Such a shame that their partnership was so short lived.

As soon as Jewell left due to GR’s criticism and meddling, we were always going to struggle. Ward was not a bad player. He’d done well at Blackburn, but the whole team lost it’s edge without Jewell and with the fan favs phased out. Ward was often chasing lost causes. I would have liked to have seen him in a City team on the up, not the one on the decline.

anyway, Blake and Mills will - as others have said - not be a partnership we’ll beat again. Hanson and Wells was another decent one, albeit two or three leagues apart.

Bobby Campbell and John Hawley weren't a bad partnership.

Hadnt they just got relegated though. I remember we never played them in the Premier League. You’re always gonna get criticism playing in a relegated side. Whats he got - 30 PL goals in about 120 games? He wasnt the best target man around by any stretch but wasn’t half as bad as our fans made out. We were utter shit.

He was superb for Barnsley, tore us apart in one home game but I don't recall him replicating that form much.

We replaced Mills with Ashley Ward and spent millions doing so .............fooking mental.

Just another brain fart decision by an owner who knew football .............Leave Jewell be and i doubt our history from 2000 onwards would have been half as bad
