If you remember Townsend came to Valley Parade in the "Milk Cup" ?.and played right wing and tore us a new one that night.
We were both at that supporters meeting when you openly challenged Jack to a £20 bet which was a lot of money for a working man in those days, which he didn't take the bet saying not merely we were good enough to get promoted if we didnt neither Stuart McCall or John Hendrie would leave Bradford City well he was proved wrong on both counts, we weren't strong enough as a squad although we has signed Mick Kennedy from Portsmouth earlier that season. at the end of that season Stuart left for Everton and John went to Newcastle

There was a good story about Dolan, and his sale of Ian Ormondroyd to Villa.Villa offered a fee which Dolan considered to be far more than Ian was worth, and asked Villa if they were taking the Mick.Villa thought he was rejecting the offer, and promptly increased it.He bit their hand off this time.

Townsend debunked this one on Talk Sport a few years ago when asked by a Bantam on a phone in.
He said he knew nothing about it.

Graham Taylor was their manager at the time I believe and as you say Villa paid £650,000 for "Sticks"

Exactly Dave, as you know I offered Jack a £20 bet when he said that McCall & Hendrie wouldn't leave, I said they would. Hell as you say £20 was a lot in those days but Jack wouldn't take me on, even though it was peanuts to him!!

It's done. Willing to see what he can bring, it souds like he made steps up teamwork wise at Northampton compared to Walsall. There was more of a press to his game which we need up top.

Really disappointed with this one hope he’s not our only / new number 9. We had the best opportunity in years and we’ve fluffed it. Most disappointing signing in the Sharpe era, they must not have any confidence of maintaining this position hence why they’re not going for it. So disappointing.

We're going well in the loan market.

    You and your conspiratorial nonsense.

Hang fire. I think you are being premature. Loads of time yet for another striker to come in.

Looking at his numbers compared to what we've had this season.

Humphrys - 4 goals, 55 shots, 19 on target. Goals per shot ratio is 0.07, goals per shot on target rate 0.21, averaging 3.98 shots per 90.
Swann - 5 goals, 23 shots, 9 on target. Goals per shot ratio is 0.22, goals per shot on target rate is 0.56, averaging 2.17 shots per 90.
Kav - 0 goals, 8 shots, 3 on target. No goals, averaging 1.82 shots per 90.
Wheatley - 3 goals, 30 shots, 13 on target. Goals per shot ratio is 0.10, goals per shot on target rate is 0.23, averaging 1.71 shots per 90.

It could be a case that Northampton just aren't a creative side? He played 20 games, but he only had 30 efforts. On average per 90, Kavanagh is having slightly more eyes at goal than Wheatley was at Northampton. His goals per shot and goals per shots on target are slightly better than Humps, but it's also worth remember Humphrys scored a 1 yard out open net tap in. If you take that effort out, Humps goals per shot goes down to 0.055 and his goals per shots on target goes down to 0.17, so statistically this season Wheatley has been slightly better in front of goal than Humphrys. But if we create chances for him at close to the rate Humphrys has, he might bring a better goals return?

Is he here as an out and out No 9 though?.. from the video he plays across the front line and also drops into midfield and presses really well.

Give the kid a chance. Jeez! It's a loan, he's young, and he's worth a look. Also, he shouldn't be counted in the registered players group*.

*Somebody much more knowledgeable may correct me on this.

The story I heard many years ago was that Villa offered £600,000 but whoever was on our end of the phoneline misheard it as £60,000 and said that was no good as Leeds had already bid £100,000. When the true offer was realised we snapped their hand off!

The reality is to get a senior striker that has scored lots of goals at this level you are looking at 7 figures and we can't afford that.
He is a young, promising player who looks like the profile of striker we want who will work hard and press. Lots of Northampton fans are positive about him and some have mentioned him playing on the left so it gives us the option to go to 343 with wide forwards rather than no 10s. It's also more depth for the strikers and competition for the likes of Humphrys and Swan.
The way we have got success this season and the way we will need to be to get success at the top end league 1 is to find players that the big spenders don't want, who often have a point to prove, and get the best out of them.

I can see where you coming from on this but I watched video of him last night and I was impressed with how quick he was and his speed of pressing down the opponent. I just hope he can score the goals we need from that position.

Don't see the logic with this. Surely he'll be lower down the pecking order than Swan and Humps. Seems weird that he/Man U with would fine with him bench warming when he was getting regular L2 football.
