Remembering back to our 69/70 season in division 3 after promotion and realising we were like now doing really well in the higher league.
By new year we had won 13 games, drawn 5 and only lost 5.
We had 31 points at 2 for a win (equivalent to 44 now), and were just behind the leaders.
We lost the home game on 31st Jan to Rotherham due to some amazing goalkeeping by Jim Furnell (I think) after putting 8 past Bournemouth the week before.
Let's hope history does not repeat itself because after new year we won only 4 more games, drew 7 and lost 12 to fade away and finish 10th.
Thanks due to Terry Frost's complete history.

Wasn’t Bournmouth and Boscombe Athletic ( Yes that’s what they were called) an FA Cup game?

No, we lost to Spurs in the cup 0-5, after a replay tho'.
For some reason I believed we were going to win, the innocence of youth.

I remember the 8-1 Bournemouth game. I seem to recall we were 6-0 up at half time?

We did play Bournemouth in an FA Cup game, at home Kev. You are right - and we mullered 'em.
If I can find the info I'll be back!

Without researching, was the home game a 2-2 draw?
I think it was a sellout and it was the only time I couldn't get into the Bradford End and had to endure the crush of the old Midland Road, Didn't Norman Corner score the equaliser or am I thinking of another game?.. memory cells fading.

First Game Result 2-2 , certainly was a sell out . Don’t remember who scored memory for goal scorers has never been good. I do remember being one of three/ four young lads who pushed/pulled a sweet cart around the perimeter during the game so got a good view of the match. Cannot remember how I got the job but got to watch without paying and being paid for the work.

Yes we drew with Spurs on the Saturday and played the replay the following Tuesday night at White Hart Lane, a few of us went down and we stood amongst the Spurs fans (a regular accurance in those days) who were brilliant on the night but they should be they scored 5 against us......great memories.

Yes, the round before the famous 2-2 draw with Burnley in front of 26,227.
Lost the replay 0-5 with a crowd of 52,850 at Turf Moor.

We drew 2-2 with Spurs and in those days you got a full strength opposition unlike now where they’d make 10 changes. We were 2-0 down in no time with Jimmy Greaves hitting the post in the first minute then scoring. I think Morgan got their 2nd. We then pulled one back with an own goal from Mike England and equalised before half time through Bruce Stowell. In the 2nd half John Hall had a great shot headed off the line by Cyril Knowles. Fantastic day in front of a packed Valley Parade.

That season really was a season in two halves. Like you say we were in a great position and challenging for promotion with Luton and Orient but we had an ageing team and a small squad and injuries and loss of form cost us. It was the start of a slump for after narrowly avoiding relegation the following season we were easily relegated the season after.

Like you Dave, was in with spurs fans and was comfortable in their company , unlike at Sunderland in the league cup the same season where they were very hostile. Perhaps beating them 2-1 didn’t help.

Yes but no but.. back then, injuries were either fixed straight away on the pitch with with the magic sponge or serious ones like ACL were treated with aspirin and a massage and back in action the next week... also players were that hard they used to play 15 cup replays, none of this penalty shoot out nonsense.:p

There were about 10 of us went to Roker Park that night in the back of a removal van, we were initially sat on chairs but after the driver breaker heavily we all decided to sit on the floor.
As you say we won 2 -1 on the night Dennis Tueart scoring for them, that night the "Roker Roar" was very quite, we drew West Bromwich Albion away the next round with West Bromwich Albion who had John Osborne, 1972 in goal we had some great banter with him.and I still believe he tried to give us a consolation goal but they beat us quite convincingly that night 4 -0 I believe.
With regards the home draw with Spurs this was their team that day :
    Starting lineup:
    Pat JenningsGoalkeeper
    Phil BealDefender
    Mike EnglandDefender
    Joe KinnearDefender
    Cyril KnowlesDefender
    Steve PerrymanDefender/Midfielder
    Alan MulleryMidfielder
    Alan GilzeanForward
    Jimmy GreavesForward
    Neil JohnsonWinger
    Roger MorganWinger
no a bad side, just heard Martin Chivers has passed away aged 80 and he couldn't get in the team that day.
