Something Rice does a lot. Difference with him though, is one minute he’s among the centre backs, then next minute he’s in the oppo box. Power needs to get forward more. Will be interesting who replaces him during his suspension. Tommy Leigh I guess, although he seems to have dropped down the pecking order quite dramatically.

 

It's a slightly different set up with Arsenal though in that Rice isn't playing as the deepest midfielder, they have Zubimendi protecting the back 4 so in essence Rice isn't emptying the space for an opponent to counter as easily.

 

He’s not suspended… yet. Simon Parker confirmed he’s on 9 yellows as it stands.

Other than that, I agree with previous posts, he’s a massive upgrade on Smallwood. Take the corner for the goal yesterday for example. Smallwood would not have beaten the first man!

 

He probably needs to pick up a yellow and miss one of next 3/4. Cant have him missing Cardiff or Town.

What if he gets sent off for two yellow cards in the next game?

Looking at the stats in the voice pre match write up for the Vale game, Kelly and Joe Wrights long ball completion rates are dire. It's understandable that he feels the need to go back and collect the ball to try and keep possession. With Touray at left centre half, Baldwin and Pennington there's 3 players who are comfortable with the ball at their feet. Less need for Power to vacate midfield. Personally I feel we won't return to the type of form we saw at the beginning of the season, until we replace Kelly or Wright with more cultured defenders. We can't keep coughing up possession and giving the front 3 no chance whatsoever.

 

Wow… Joe Wright has been absolutely immense all season. First name on the team sheet for me!

 

I'm not sure we'd get 3 decent, cultured defenders at this level. Those type of players go through the leagues pretty quickly. I think Wright (or A.N.Other, big imposing centre half) is much needed for the middle spot and then the two wider centre halves could perhaps be the ball players.

 

I think he's been decent in some games and terrible in others. It's easy to forget how poor he was against Orient when he had a good game yesterday. The fact Alexander doesn't wholly trust him to play in the centre position is quite telling. He's often beaten in the air by smaller forwards which is worrying. I agree he has had some really strong performances, and hopefully being picked regularly will bring about that consistency.

 

Immense is a massive over exaggeration. He's had some great games but theres been a handful of games when he's badly struggled.

Giving it large to GA and he can't track runners been the reasons.

 

Could try him at right centre back instead of Baldwin. He'd have something in common.

 

Difference being Baldwin does a job and Leigh is crap and Baldwin gobbed at the ref and not the gaffer.

 

His worse games have come when he’s had to play RCB, just play him at centre with Baldwin on his right and a better LCB and he’ll before consistent. It’s also important we finally look to have a CB who can chip in with 5+ goals a season.

 

Yes I agree he was average against Orient and Doncaster, but we’re talking Division 3 here. As with any player at this level they would be in the Prem if they were consistently good every week. For me he’s one of the best centre backs we’ve had for years.
