Seeing as there’s no thread for Richie in the Former Players forum - he’s just signed for Tranmere Rovers on a 1 year deal.

Reading the Tranmere twitter noise and forum after they lost today, doesn't sound like Smallwood is winning over their lot. Fair few comments of "he looks past it" or similar wording mentioned this season. Sounds like he's struggling to get across the midfield and isn't getting the team moving with the ball either.

    Dodged one there?

I think even Richies biggest fans can see that Power looks a step up at the minute. Fitness and durability seems to be the only question so far but hopefully we've a strong enough squad to help Power manage the minutes a bit and have him available for as many minutes as possible.

Indeed. I thought we might miss him, also thought GA should go at some point last season, he's shoved my opinions right up me

I think that dodgy spell before Xmas focused everyone’s minds to his capabilities …. All those injuries at the end of the day .

He and his team have done exceptionally well in fairness .

I wish him the best and I feel sure he'll be a decent signing over the course of the season for Tranmere, but do i wish he'd stayed - no absolutely not! Power is head and shoulders above him

Smallwood getting some absolute pelters tonight and not for the first time this season. This one certainly feels like we cut bait at the right time.

When it’s going for you it’s going for you in football isn’t it, GA seemingly getting all these tough decisions spot on. Very controversial at the time but now Max Power looks a big upgrade and is pivotal to our team whereas Smallwood is struggling at a relegation threatened league 2 side

As GA said over the summer about letting Smallwood go, “I get paid to make big decisions and I made one”. He also praised him heavily but he clearly saw the bigger picture.

I really hope he turns it around. Maybe he'll follow the trajectory he had at city - first year terrible, second amazing! Although at the stage of his career he'll start to run out of seasons!

He was excellent for the last 6 months of his career with City, bar the Swindon debacle. Prior to that I found him a frustrating player whose dead ball deliveries were appalling, aside from most of the penalties he took.
Call me an old cynic but his best performances coincided with the possibility of a new contract.

I think GA and the team involved knew it was the right time to move him on, and other really. I think so far they've a good track record on parting ways at the right time, maybe Kelly and Richards still with questions over their new deals but all in all a good team making the right choices.

And with Halliday, Kavanagh, Baldwin, Pattison, T Wright, Kelly, Richards, Hilton, Byrne, Cook, Sarcevic & Hadi i wouldn't be surprised to see another harsh but needed separation next summer for a fair few.

It will have to happen as none of those are Championship standard.

We've arguably two or three players at a push that might make it here or elsewhere in the championship. Neufville and Pointon although i'm not sure either are at that level, possibly Max Power although he's getting on a bit. Metcalfe maybe but will have to see how he develops, he does have the mobility which for me is the biggest difference when going up through the divisions.

Yeah the rebuild if this momentum continues will be unreal. If Rupp can afford to rebuild again too is another question...
